ORAL HSV2 protection against genital hsv2?

by bummedout, May 04, 2007 12:00AM
Thanks to anyone in advance who might be able to help me figure out my individual situation....  Had oral sex with new boyfriend (DEFINATELY NOW EX BOYFRIEND) who only  now tells me that he has genital hsv2.  History is what I thought was a cold sore appeared just 3 days after giving oral sex to him.  On that same occasion, we had unprotected vaginal sex but I did not have any outbreak genitally (that i know of).  Question is that since I had the oral outbreak and not the genital outbreak, is it possible that I only have oral hsv2 and not genital hsv2?  Is it possible that the first entry point (oral) gave me some type of protection from getting the genital hsv2, even though it was on the same occasion?  Just hoping that maybe i will only have to fear another oral outbreak rather than a genital outbreak.   Any comments or advice greatly appreciated.  Doctor has confirmed that i have hsv2, just not sure where?
thanks

Studies have found that in folks who contract hsv2 orally - they usually also have hsv2 genitally - even if they aren't noticing symptoms.  The exception of course would be if the only contact was oral.

I'm assuming the cold sore is gone so there is no way to get it cultured and typed. Have you ever had a cold sore before?

Why not go get a baseline herpes igg blood test for hsv1 and hsv2 now and then repeat it in 3 months?

Do you know if your ex was on daily suppressive therapy or not?  Were you two together very long?

Thanks for input.  I was only with him one time and yes he was on supressive therapy.  I have had cold sores in the past, but not like this one.  The test that i had did show hsv2 level was at 3.6    .  Again just hoping that maybe the initial oral contact might have protected me from the genital acquisition.  Any chance that the saliva from the oral could have removed enough of the virus before penetration?  Grabbing at straws here, just hoping....

so you had a herpes blood test already and the hsv2 result was 3.6?

please post your test results in a new post and label it for grace so I'm sure to see it ( don't get here everyday ).  Also post how long after your oral symptoms started that you were tested.

thanks!
