Oral gonorrhea and infections.

Ok...here's the situation,

I had oral sex with two guys, on different days about 3/25.  One of them developed symptoms of a gonorrhea infection on about 3/30.  The other has been asymptomatic.  About that same time (3/30) I developed a mild sore throat and very stuffy nose.  Feeling better, I had oral sex again with the asymptomatic guy on 4/6.  He had a physical with a complete STD screen on 4/8 that was negative for any std's.  I finally got tired of the stuffy nose (sore throat had subsided) on 4/9 and went to the doctor.  Doctor looked and wasn't certain that I had any type of infection.  He said he could see that I had some drainage but nothing looked especially irritated.  Because I had been previously diagnosed (and treated with 1000mg  Amoxicillin three times daily) with a sinus and left ear infection about a month earlier he suspected that I could possibly have some type of resistant sinusitus and prescribed Augmentin XR (1000 mg) 2 pills twice a day.  I had oral sex again with the asymptomatic guy again on 4/11.  I was informed by the guy who developed gonorrhea of all this today, 4/14, and have not had sex with him since before his symptoms began.

So my questions:

Typically what are the symptoms of oral gonorrhea?  How likely is it that I was a carrier?  How likely is it that someone would get gonorrhea from having oral sex from a carrier?

Could I have had oral gonorrhea and not known it?  Could my sore throat one month ago be oral gonorrhea and resistant to the antibiotics?  Could I have passed it to the guy who developed symptoms, even though one month prior I had undergone such a strong course of amoxicillin?  Are these bugs resistant to amoxicillin?

If the guy who is asymptomatic hasn't developed symptoms at this point, and has been tested negative, how likely is it that he may have gonorrhea, assuming I was the initial carrier?

Now that I'm taking the Augmentin, would it be advisable that I get tested?  Is Augmentin a good medication for treating these types of infections?

Who should get tested again, and when?

Thank you.

I just got treated for Oral Gonorrhea today, had sore throat for 10 days (not today) and only for the first couple days of it was I feeling slightly fluish, so my answer is, a persisting fluctuating sore throat and inflammation.

A good discussion of antibiotic resistence in Gonorrhea can be found oon the CDC web site. Please note that there is a small but significant resistence to penicillin. CDC still recommends treatment with cefixime or ceftriaxone. Note also a report of a multiresistent strain found in Hawaii. Augmetin would theoretically be effective to Most strains of Gonorrhea thus the reason for Dr. Handsfield`s answer. Aj still remains correct in giving you the CDC`s recommendation. So Dr, Handsfield and Aj are both technically correct...for sake of argument. Take care.

augmentin would likely cure it if you had enough of it.  I am just curious if you asked the doctors why are you asking us....... none of us are doctors.......you came for advice and the advice was sound.  The cure for oral ghonnorhea is not augmentin as advised by the CDC and I think you will find if you rephrased your question and asked the docs what the reccomended cure would be they would not even list augmentin or amoxicillin.  AJ is exceptionally knowledgeable in STD's if you don;t like the advice find your reassurances elsewhere. Good luck I wish you all the best.

All I can do is go by what the CDC recommends in the STD Treatment Guidelines.

Augmentin might cure it - that's fine.  Its just not a chance I would want to take.  You are entitled to take that chance if you want.

And I agree that a follow up test is never a bad idea.

If you want to argue some more - go for it.  I'm done.

I hate to argue with you, but....
On April 15, 2008 Dr. Hansfield said, " Augmentin xr is active against even the resistant strains."  This is the day after you said it won't cure-

Your implication that what I posted was old and new information supports your statement is incorrect.  Within 24 hours of you post Dr. Hansfield spcifically states the opposite.

Nothing wrong with a follow-up test no matter what the antibiotic used is.

I don't know when that was written.  What we know NOW is that gonorrhea is resistant to many drugs, and the CDC recommends cefexime only.

People can take whatever their doctor recommends, but I'd at least ask for follow up testing a month or longer after treatment.  Something MIGHT cure it, but its not something that I would personally rely on.  Others can do as they chose.

Right on this forum the doctors said it.

Where did you read that?

Gonorrhea is resistant to many drugs, and while it MIGHT cure it, its not something I'd choose to rely on.

Oddly you statement that augmentin woun't cure is contradicted by the DOCTORS

"Most gonorrhea responds to the penicillin-class drugsChemical dependence - resources
Chemotherapy, especially in the doses you had.  But 10-15% are resistant.  Augmentin xr has not been studied for its effect against pharyngeal gonorrhea, but in the doses used for strepStrep throat , it probably would cure it.

I keep reading from different people that "Typically, oral gonorrhea is asymptomatic".....what if it isn't typical? then what? what are the symptoms for oral gonorrhea?are they parallel to symptoms of a cold/sinus infection like so many people are confusing them with, or is there an appearance of chancre sores or throat nodules? or pus on your tonsils? etc? Im interested to hear.

I can't offer chances of infection - too many variables would affect it.

Your azithromycin and augmentin won't cure gonorrhea.

Typically, oral gonorrhea is asymptomatic, and you sound like you did have a sinus infection.

Since you are on the antibiotics, the only thing you can do is wait 2 weeks after you take the last pill, then test for gonorrhea orally.

You should also let your other partner know so he can test as well.
