Penile Pain - Herpes?

by OKnow, Mar 23, 2007 12:00AM
Twenty four days ago I received oral sex (no condom) from a stripper in manila, 2-3 minutes long. Stopped her after that. 1 week later had frequent urination and prostate/bladder pain. went to doctor 12 days after incident was swabbed (neg for gono/chlamydia) no sores/blister/canchers no other tests done. Put on Cipro for 10 days. Frequent urination cleared up quickly.
For the past 5-6 days (starting 18 days after incident) my penis feels "hot" and sometimes painfull along with the tip, also my anus feels "hot" and not quite right. the ridge of the penis head seems "raised" and slightly red in one place, the penis is slighly irritated on top mostly. It really hurts more that it looks like much, at first I thought this was due to possible exposure to Retin-a that I was putting on my face and thought that I had possibly touched my penis with the retin-a (maybe I didn't wash my hands and touched myself at night while peeing or inspecting my penis) but it seems like after a few days this would go away. I also masturbated twice during the past week and the ridge was irritated and more red after this. I am very concerned about herpes (I know this is a low risk exposure). This happend while on vacation and I did take a valtrex 2-3 times as I was starting to get a cold sore (sometimes happens with first sun exposure and the stress of traveling) a few days after the incident. maybe this masked the initial blisters that would have happened within the usual 6 days? The past 6-7 days of penile pain without actually getting blisters etc... is the only encouraging sign at this time. My penis skin just hurts on and off for 6 days. I've put vaseline on it because rubbing on my clothes hurts. Going to follow up with doctor in 2 days. I've never had any symptoms of herpes in the past, have had safe sex most of my life (34 yrs) with unprotected sex only with long term girlfriends (2-3). starting to worry about possible asymptomatic herpes for a long period? although it seems like sypmtoms would have come up at some point. Please offer some insight. Thanks.

without lesions or a blood-test you won't know for sure.

i had bumps and a patch of sore skin, very red.

Have a blood test, but if you get bumps, lesions will be a better test.

I think you may be over-reacting, not to sound creul, but its very rare that you would get genital herpes from somebody with a coldsore (did she even have a visable one)..even though it is very possible - its called hsv-1. my doctor thinks that my herpes was from recieving oral. but i will only know for sure when i get my results.

I doubt very much you have herpes.

dont stress get a test

Your biggest herpes risk with oral sex is hsv1 genitally. You already get cold sores so you have significant protection against contracting it genitally. You didn't notice any obvious cold sores on her when she performed oral sex on you so it's not likely that you have hsv1 genitally now on top of  a well established hsv1 oral infection.

hsv2 orally isn't very common. In folks who have it - it doesn't reoccur very often and doesn't shed very often either. It's unlikely you contracted hsv2 thru oral sex.

I'd return to your doctor for a further work up. Sometimes normal mouth flora can really cause some troubles when it's in the genital area. Also you can get fungal infections along with strep infections in the genital area ( that includes the anal area too ).  Your doctor can test for both very easily.  Also you should give a urine specimen and have them check it for white cells too - the cipro might not have taken care of everything.

While there - definitely get tested for hsv2 for peace of mind - not because of your encounter with the sex worker but because your hsv1 oral infection can make a genital hsv2 infection appear much milder and without periodic type specific igg blood testing - you might be infected with hsv2 and not know it and be exposing your partners to it.  I'm a fan of routine hsv testing since it's better to find out thru a blood test and be able to take precautions to protect a partner than to find out you have it after you've already infected a partner.

Thanks for the responses. Logically I can process what you are saying but emotionally it is very difficult to deal with. The pain is pretty much gone at this time with no blisters or bumps ever appearing. Sweating out a test adds to the anxiety but it's the smart thing to do. Although my symptoms do not suggest typical herpes I did get a blood test today hopefully results this week. The timing of the pain is very scary: 3-4 weeks after an encounter (that I have never had/done before) that was connected to guilt and shame. the fact that I have had cold sores since I can remember equally scares and comforts me. I understand that it offers some protection against aquiring genital HSV I (comfort) but masks/dimishes sypmtoms of HSV II (scares). Either way getting helpful responses is appreciated from you both. I hope to be able to comfort people in the same way on this forum or any of the health related forums on this helpful website. Thanks.

Cont...
Oh yeah, I did recieve a urine test initially (before cipro) no WBC were found even then.  If I had gotten HSV 2 weeks before would there have been positive WBC's w/ urine strip?

Also, I was swabbed today to check if there is possible HSV urthreal. I had not heard of this, only swabs for gono/chlmdia.

At this point the anxiety is it's own entity. Which seems to be very common on this forum.
It's really out of my hands until test results are back later this week, and probably follow up test results in a few months.
Again, thanks for the help and kind words. Sex is a healthy fun part of life but we all must be responsible. I am trying to learn this lesson.

If anyone has a moment please respond.
I posted awhile back and this skin pain continues (see above). The skin on my penis feels very sensitive all the time and is sometimes slightly red, it's been hurting for the past three weeks. it wont hurt for a day or two and then will hurt. it seems to be in the area where my penis touches my underwear, the pain is on the left/top side below the glans and the top of the head mostly. If this is just skin irritation It seems like it would go away. 1 month after the short exposure (3 min unprotected oral) tested neg for HSV II, syphillis, gono & chlamydia. (Will get re-tested after 3 mons.) It's been 2 months 11 days since incident. for past 3 weeks have been feeling this pain again and it seems like it should go away. there have not been lesions or blisters at any point. a few times the skin just seems irritated and "bumpy" like if you touched something you were allergic to. I can't remember not being able to masturbate or have sex because of irritated skin for over 3 weeks. the doctor does not think it's herpes upon inspection. what is happening?
