Hello !confused!

I am in a similar boat.  I've had tingling sensations since early July and noticed that on the head (rim) there are 4-5 tiny dark red spots.  Though it doesn't hurt when I urinate, it does give off a tingling sensation when I'm sitting. There is also some soreness in the general area. You can only really see them (red spots) if you stretch the skin to look for them or if the penis becomes erect.  I've been to my PCP and they prescribed me some anitbiotics incase of syphillis or gonoreah.  Question for Dr: Could this be the onset of Herpes?  Could being on antibiotics suppress the herpes from fully developing?  I've had a blood test for everything but herpes.  I have a couple days left of the anitbiotics and I'm pretty frightend that after the doses stop the herpes will come?  My PCP has said burning when urinating is typical of genital herpes and lesions but I'm pretty frightend that the antibiotics is suppressing the outbreak.  Nothing else has popped up on my head yet but I'm looking for any assistance or words of calm that you can give.  Thank you.

Hello.
This is my first time using this.

I Had sex for the second time ever october of last year, when i had my ejaculation, the condom fell off, she was on the pill though, but i mustve been inside without the condom on for a few seconds, i now know to hold it when im ejaculating. After this I went home and had a shower, when i noticed an uncomfortable burning sensation, ever since, i have still got this after about 8 months. Ive been to the std clinic four times, being tested and the doctor said it was nothing. The symptoms I am getting are a burning sensation out of nowhere not when im urinating but just in my penis and "balls", it comes out of nowhere. when im urinating, alot of dripping happens in the end with a seaman like liquid at the end at times, and it seems as if two holes are coming out when i am, than form into one. It is very uncomfortable and i dont know what to do, can you help?
I am 18 years old

Well, both doctors agreed that the redness on my glans was noticeable and abnormal, but they both discounted herpes.  It is just my anxiety, perhaps, but redness on glans along with flu-like symptoms, along with sequential development of sensitivity/soreness on thighs/mons and exacerbation during acute illness and following tingling in area of "lesions" seems suspicious even if the actual lesions are non-specific for herpes.  Moreover, it has been a week since that tingling feeling (a week of the worse symptoms yet), and now I am almost back to normal, with persistent thigh tenderness, glans redness and glans pain (to touch).  Is that a recurrence?  I guess it isn't worth taking any more of your time, since I will go back at 12 weeks post exposure for another herpeselect test.

p.s. Is testicular swelling/mild pain ever herpetic?  I was told rarely, and when it is it is excruciating.
p.p.s. Is herpetic erythema characteristic at all?  Or is the appearance of non-classical lesions as varied as the symptoms of this disease?

Thanks for your help, and any additional comment would be greatly appreciated.  This site is truly a service.
I hope when I am a physician I can provide half the relief and compassion that you provide just on this forum (I am a med student).

Your description doesn't suggest what I would call overt lesions, especially since the doctors who examined you apparently didn't see anything they considered abnormal.

Thanks again for the prompt response.
I do have "overt lesions"--they aren't classical herpes vesicles, but I have redness on my glans, and that is where the majority of my irritation, soreness, and pain arise from.  Thanks for your help, and sorry for the prolonged string of comments(/paranoia).

The herpes prodrome you have read about occurs in people with clear recurrent outbreaks of herpes, i.e. with overt skin lesions, and lasts for 1-2 days before each outbreak.  The prolonged symptoms you describe do not suggest herpes.

Since you have been examined by 2 different providers, one of whom is an STD expert, you can rely on their advice and can be confident that your symptoms don't indicate anything serious for you or your sex partners.  Your anxiety may be magnifying normal body sensations that don't mean anything.

Thanks Dr. HHH--I appreciate your input, especially since my post was a follow-up comment.

I am confused, though, since I have read so much about the herpes prodrome consisting of tingling in the location of the lesions, followed by exacerbation of symptoms.  That is exactly what happened to me at least once.  More than that, my other major flare-up was during illness (mono), which seems typical as well.
And, even though you and my other doctors keep shooting down herpes as the diagnosis, I have yet to have another explanation offered--that is very disheartening to me.

thanks again

Gibbons15:  Maybe masturbation, I suppose.  But if the STD provider coudn't see anything abnormal, I'm quite sure you have nothing abnormal.  Your symptoms soudn most like the result of anxiety magnifying otherwise normal body sensations.

!confused!:  Your symptoms really aren't "characteristic of herpes".  You should rely on the opinions of the doctors you have seen; it sounds like they are on the right track.

I have a very similar situation--redness on head of penis appearing about 36 hours after sexual contact, accompanied by slighlty delayed flu-like symptoms (sans congestion or rhinitis).  The redness/soreness on my glans and regional itchiness has persisted for about 10 weeks now, and is cyclical.  It got worse when i was diagnosed with mono (about 4 weeks after the exposure), and now got worse for the past week following a distinct tingling sensation that I interpreted as herpes prodrome (these subsequent episodes were actually more intense than the first one).  I got a HerpeSelect test at about 8.5 weeks post-exposure, and was negative for both types.  But, because of my recent 'recurrence' (more like exacerbation, because the symptoms never have gone away), and because I have sensitivity on my mons pubis, inguinal area, and inner thighs (no obvious dermatomal arrangement, but it could be femoral nerve cutaneous nerve domain), I suspect herpes. I am befuddled as two doctors (one PCP, one STI specialist) have both dismissed herpes AND I have a negative blood test.  But, except for the absence of ulcers, it seems so characteristic of herpes.

thanks. i went to an STD clinic today and the doc said that it didnt look like herpes. she said she couldnt see anything abnormal
but it still feels weird.

i masterbated around the same time as the sex 2 months ago with vaseline intensive care hand lotion...do you think that could cause irritation?

It doesn't sound like herpes, which would not persist more or less unchanged for 2 months.  But I can't be certain and can't otherwise speculate.  See a health care provider, such as your local health department's STD clinic.

Good luck-- HHH, MD
