Possibility of PID?

Hello Doctor,

On Dec. 17 I was diagnosed with chlamydia and began a 10-day course of doxycycline.  I began medicine only 8 days after the act of intercourse that caused this infection.  This was the 2nd time I've had chlamydia (the first time was 2 years ago, and that time it was caught and treated within 5 weeks of infection).

On Jan. 4 I went back to the doctor for a follow up.  He checked again for chlamydia and gonorrhea.  Both were negative.  However, I was having some discomfort and a small amount of white lumpy which the doctor believed was probably due to a yeast infection because of the antibiotic (he did not perform a pelvic exam).  I've never had a yeast infection before.  He gave me a 1-pill dose of Diflucan.

I felt better after a few days.  But now, for the last 2 days, I have been having the similar symptoms as with the yeast infection, only worse.  Lower abdomincal cramping, vulva is irritated and slightly itchy, my whole abdominal area from belly button down feels tender and bloated, lower back pain, and I just don't feel well in general, but I haven't noticed any abnormal discharge so far.  What's happening here?  These don't sound like normal yeast infection symptoms, from what I've read.

Could I have PID?  Even though my chlamydia infection was diagnosed and treated very quickly?  The doctor can't see me until tomorrow morning.  I'm very worried, as I've read that PID can cause damage very quickly.  Will I be OK until tomorrow?  Thanks for your help.

Thanks so much for your reply.  Knowing that PID is not a likely possibility, I think I will be able to relax and hopefully get a good night's sleep before tomorrow's appointment.  (I'm sure that worry has been a significant part of my problem.)

I will be happy to add to this post once these current symptoms are diagnosed.  Thanks very much!!

The history you give does not suggest that you have PID.  You received excellent therapy.  The symptoms you describe could be from a drug reaction or some other process.  The list of possibilities is long and to sort things out you would need to do a detailed history and repeat examination. going back to the doctor who say you is exactly the right thing to do.  Do not worry about PID from your chlamydial infection of a month ago however, that is not what is going on here.

If you chose, it would be great to hear what your doctor says is going on here.  EWH
