Question about Trichomoniasis

Hi Dr.

I thought I would post another question not a follow up as you said no more. I realise that this is my 2nd and the rules state no more than 2 in six months so I will not be posting again.

I just want to confirm something:

Trichomoniasis is NOT spread by oral sex. Only unprotected vaginal or anal sex. Correct.

Has there been cases of it spreading orally?

Also, would the 1g of azithro and 400mg of cefixine killed off trich if it were to be present?

Thanks.

You are repeating yourself an asking me to o the same.  These will be the last answers.  You really need to put these concerns behind you.  My sense is that my efforts to provide information are only fueling your inappropriate concerns.  There are no cases of oral trichomoniasis thus there are no data to suggest that there is any reason for you to be concerned about oral trich.

1.  Correct
2.  Correct
3.  Correct
4.  Unknown, no reported cases
5.  Trichomonas can be diagnosed weeks or even months after infection.  The most common symptom in women is vaginal discharge.  The odor may or may not be fishy.

The thread is now over.  EWH

Hi There,

So just for clarification:

1. It is not spread by a woman/man performing either fellatio or cunninglingus as the bug does not survive in the oral cavity.

2. So if a man was to have the bug in his penis, then if he were receiving fellatio he would not be able to spread it to the other person's mouth.

3. And if a person was performing cunninglingus on a woman who had the bug, it would not be transmitted either way.

4. Also, can it be spread via unprotected anal sex?

5. Finally, my Dr at FH told me that if a woman was to have it the symptoms, after months of last exposure, would show up. The most obvious symptom being the foul smelling fishy odour. Correct?

The reason I ask is because my current partner has had unprotected oral sex before where he has performed fellatio on men, but never unprotected anal or vaginal sex. My partner has only given unprotected fellatio roughy 5 times and received it maybe 15 times.

In light of that info, do you think I should be able to move on and forget this worry?

Merci.

Welcome back to the forum and thanks for acknowledging your awareness of our guidelines for questions.  I appreciate it.  You got me this time but I have read your earlier interaction with Dr. Handsfield.

Trichamonas is an interesting disease in many ways.  One thing we are clear on however is that it is not spread through oral sex.  I am not aware of any cases in which trichamonas has been documented to be spread through oral sex.

Neither azithromycin nor cefixime has been formally studied for trichamonas. Clinical experience is very clear however that neither of these drugs is reliable therapy for trichamonas. EWH
