Questions about Herpes Type 1 - HSV

Had drunk protected oral sex and drunk protected intercourse with a CSW on Dec 31st, she bled a bit from since I guess she was on her menstrual cycle, got tested for everything on Jan 2nd, rec'd blood tests today and was clear of everything except for Herpes Type 1 - HSV.  Questions...

How serious is HSV?
Isn't HSV relatively common?
How contagious is HSV?
Can I pass this along with future unprotected sex?
Would this of even showed up from a Jan 2nd test if exposure was on Dec 31st?  Did I probably have this before the Dec 31st exposure?
The big question-->  what and when should I get re-tested to know I am 120% in the clear with everything?  Am I at serious risk for any other STD or HIV?
