Red bump at base of Penis in Hair

Hi, I appreciate the forum and the great information.

I am 30 years old and had unprotected sex with a woman friend of mine about 8 days ago who (according to her) had had no problems with std’s (for whatever that’s worth).

The morning after my penis was red and tender (seemingly from slightly dry active intercourse). There were also initially a few bumps on the shaft near the base on the side of my penis where the hair was coming out, it seemed to me they where just irritated hair follicles from friction (because the bumps are only where hairs where coming out). They went away after a day, then 2 days later, after masturbating, the head of my penis had some dry flaky skin. I put moisturizer on that and it has been normal and has not been dry since. I figured these where nothing more than slight penile trauma from rough dry sex.

Then, as is my habit, I trimmed my pubic hairs (I did not shave anything and merely trimmed the length in half). Maybe a day after that (6 days after intercourse) I noticed a red bump at the base of my penis in the shortened hair. It is not painful and doesn’t itch. There is a medium length hair coming out of the top of the bump so it appears to be focused in or around the hair follicle. When I pull on the hair itself I can see the hair is coming from the center of the red bump.

Am I right in thinking the early irritations and dry skin where just from dry sex?

As for the red bump, I am concerned and not sure what to make of it. Obviously it concerns me that it is herpes, syphilis, clymidia, or some other std.

No STD can cause symptoms the next day. You probably are a better judge than I can be whether there was irritation during sex that might explain your symptoms.  The bumps in the pubic hair area, especially after shaving, sound like folliculitis is a good bet.  In any case, you describe nothing that suggests herpes or any other STD to me.  Chlamydia or syphilis don't cause any symptoms like this.  Of course see a health care provider to be sure, especially if your symptoms persist.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
