SYPHILIS
I KNOW I HAVE a 24 year syphilis. I have not been feeling well since Feb. I'm having numbness in my spine to my hands and feet and my vision seems to be off as well. Through the years( I HAVE HAD ALL THE SYMPTOMS) not knowing at the time of what they were. I WOULDN'T of thought of this then due to us being our first and ONLY partners,and especially so young. I WAS 14-15. We stayed together and ended up marrying at 21. I know we had a blood test then and it came back fine in 1993. Would the test still show something after all of those years? 7 years?? Since then we have split and now am remarried in 2001. Blood test wasn't required then. Since then I HAVE HAD 2 KIDS. I KNOW they tested me for syphilis in both pregnancies and everything came back fine from the blood tests ( RPR) I had one test in 2002 and the other in 2005. Is it possible my body isn't throwing off the antibodies for all the tests because it has been so long? I wanted to get my kids tested and my peditrician for the kids told me I'm crazy,because since Feb of 2010 this year I have had 3 RPR TESTS ,followed by 2 FTAB-ABS TESTS WHICH ALL CAME BACK NEGATIVE AND EVEN HAD A LUMBAR PUNCTURE WHICH THEY FOUND NOTHING. No wbc,not 1, no rbc, not 1, no protein,nothing on gram stain EVERYTHING IS NEGATIVE. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE ??????????? All I'm trying to do is get treated for something I KNOW I HAVE . I even have the crazy stuff you get on the tongue that no one can explain. They all tell me it is a geographical tongue.....?????????? I HAVE BEEN TO MY PRIMARY MANY OF TIMES,HAD ALL THE TEST, BEEN TO INFECTIOUS DISEASE 3 TIMES AND NO ONE WILL HELP ME. What needs to happen before they will treat me?? PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!
sorry to report but on uptodate.com syphilis article it clearly states within an article and through a graph that false negative testing for RPR and VDRL is more than possible, it is expected more often as years go by after secondary syphilis. I can't comment on the other tests such as the specific treponemal testing and the LP.
you are driving yourself Crazy. you dont have syphilis, TRUST SCIENCE. you can tqake 100 more tests they will remain negative. move on.
For the most part syphilis does not exist. Only 20,000 new cases in the US last year (and this was an increase back when you were 15 or whatever I doubt that there was even 20,000 new cases) and most were in the bi and gay communities. Yes you have had every test multiple of times and all negative.
Something you are not understanding is that you were never exposed to syphilis. You really need to believe this.

HI , Yes I have seen 2 neurologists. The first one ordered a bunch of blood work up on me . Told him my thoughts, he didn't seem to believe me either, and I also has a stroke sometime in my lifetime which they don't know when being that the tissue is old looking on the MRI. It was definately nothing recent I was told. Doing different research they say that syphilis can mask itself as a stroke in young adults, they call this disease the GREAT IMITATOR. Can you see why I'M pushing so hard for this? I know this is what it is.The 2nd neurologist told me syphilis doesn't exist in the US anymore,but she is the one who ordered my lumbar puncture against her better judgement. been tested for M.S.,LYME,HIV,LUPUS,CSFVDRL. This is why I'm so concerned that it is laying dormant and not being detected. They say I HAVE HAD THE MILLION DOLLAR work up so not sure what the problem is. I'm not imagining it . They said if it was MS, they would of seen spots on the brain. there are none though. I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. Have I had all the tests for syphilis that you know of???

Have you seen a nurologist about the numbness? If not then maybe take that step or even post in the community here.
If your body did not produce antibodies then you would basically have no immune system at all you would would have been dead from a common cold. Antibodies are produced no matter what infection you have. No if's and's or but's about it.
Geographic tongue is something I have heard of before and it does explain the tongue issue you are having.
As for your kids if I was a Dr I would see no reason to draw blood and test them also. You were tested over and over and you don't have syphilis.
I see that a lot of people have helped you but you are not accepting answers from them. I would seriously explore a therapist at this point. I think emotionally you need someone to talk with.

I'M just freaked out especially the thing I have and had on the tongue for years that no one can explain and when i looked it up it is a syphilis tongue. I NEVER SEEN anyone ever have a tongue like this,everyone elses is smooth and red . Mine gets white and patchy.I've been at sooo many doctors since Feb, primary doctor, infectious disease doctors they tell me yes those are ALL the symptoms but your test is negative ,when I SAY MAYBE MY BODY ISN'T THROWING OFF THE ANTIBODIES THEY THINK i'M NUTS.I dont want to have dimentia or be paralyzed before someone will help me or TREAT ME. I'm trying to do the responsible thing by trying to test the kids and the peditrician threw me out.He said absolutely not. What would you do when no one says they cant help you ??
If you had syphilis (which you don't) tests would pick it up no matter what. If it progressed to neuro syphilis then a lumbar puncture would pick it up. There is no way around this.
You have provided no reasonable way that you could have gotten syphilis. Even if you did not have all of those tests I would advise you that you do not have syphilis.
Syphilis is only passed from sex. If you had a bf who was a virgin then he does not have syphilis, which means you don't have syphilis.
You are worried about the follow symptoms (slight rash, weight loss, fever, being sick for 2 weeks, numbness, and vision being "off") I can explain all of those and have them have nothing to do with syphilis.
Rash-Heat, soap, detergent, irritation, anxiety
Weight loss-Lack of appetite, diet change, flu
Fever-Viral infection
Sick for 2 weeks-viral infection
Vision-anxiety, normal eye deteriation
Numbness-pinched nerve, pinched artery/vein
I have had a rash before...on my arms and on my forehead and I don't have syphilis
I have lost weight from a change in diet, from not eating,
I have had a fever...last fever I got was 102
Sick-I have had a cold for weeks, I have had the flu
Vision-I have just started to need glasses for the 1st time
Numbness-I have had my leg "fall asleep" due to position I was sitting and felt the effects for hours after

To be totally HONEST with you I DO NOT KNOW how this is happening to me. I DO REMEMBER HAVING WHAT i believe to be was the chancre of course what went away on it's own, then all the crazy stuff on the tongue with the cancre sores in the mouth with which went away . All the doctors always had an answer but i don't think the correct one. I remember having a slight rash on my body ( like small dots) they said it could be adult chicken pox (???????????????) have had the weight loss, fever,and was sick for 2 weeks that no one couldn't explain. is ALL of this really coincidence??? I'm freaking out, Why aren't the tests picking it up?? would a lumbar puncture pick it up even though it may not be neuro syphilis??? It would be ashame to die especially if it was something treatable. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

No the antibodies would show up and certainly if it was neuro syphilis the lumbar puncture would have found it.

You need to have a positive test. Which you don't have a positiv test. YOU DO NOT HAVE SYPHILIS. To start if you and bf were virgins when you 1st had sex then he could not have syphilis to give you. Second with I don't know how many tests if you did have syphilis then you would have tested positive for it.
Follow up with your Dr because whatever issue you have is not related to syphilis.
