Scared of HIV

Scared of HIV

Hi

I have quite the embarrasing story.  I went to canada and drank too much and had sex with someone I didn't know.  I was a virgin and so I am scared it could make me more likely to get HIV because of tearing.  I don't know if condom was used.  I actually am not sure I even had sex.  I don't ever remember it and he says no we didn't but I don't know if i can believe that. It has been 3 months since then and I got a negative HIV test results at 30 days.  I still talk to the man and he said he doesn't have HIV.  He also went to get tested with me but I wasn't able to hear the results of the test because of privacy reasons. Also, today I was told that I have genital warts from that incidence because he is the only one I have been with.  I hear that it is more likely to get HIV with an STD so I am scared.  They also say that most people that Have HPV don't get symptoms like genital warts unless their immune system is down.
My questions are:
1)With a negative test result at 30 days can that be reassuring or not really?
2)Am I more likely to get HIV with HPV?
3)Could that be a reason why I have the genital warts appearing because I have HIV?

Relax.  The odds you caught HIV from a single episode of vaginal sex is extremely low, even if your partner had HIV (which almost certainly he did not, given his reassurance), even if you got warts.

1) A 30 day test is highly reliable, if not perfect.  For peace of mind, you might want to be tested against 8-12 weeks after the event.  It also will be negative.

2) Although most STDs increase the risk of HIV infection if exposed, this probably is NOT the case with HPV or warts.

3) No, almost certainly not.

Follow up with your health care provider.  If not certain s/he is expert in STD/HIV issues, you might get another opinion.  You strike me as someone who really needs the personal advice of a knowledgeable, caring provider.  A family planning clinic, such as Planned Parenthood or your local health department's clinic, would be a good bet.

Bottom line:  You have no reason to be seriously concerned about HIV.  Best wishes and good luck (and stay safe!)--  HHH, MD
