No, certainly not. Teh most common causes or urethral discharge are nongonococcal urethritis, gonorrhea and chlamydia. EWH
Last question: IF the discharge persists is herpes the primary suspect? Thank you doctor.
I repeat "I would not worry at this time. There is little reason to worry that you have an STI and many reason to not worry."
I would supect that it is not that the discharge has not occcurred but that you have not noticed it. If rthe discharge persists SPONTANEOUSLY throughout the day I would suggest you get tested again. Treatment without a diagnosis however is not a good idea. If you seek evaluation, please insist on being tested. EWH
The discharge concerns me as it hasnt happened before
Is there a possibility of some other kind of infection with the symptoms I described? What steps do you think I should move forward with besides possibly counciling/therapy? Possible further testing?
Welcome to our Forum. I'll be happy to provide some perspective and a comment or two. In preparing to address your question I did review some of your recent interactions on the HSV Community site.
As I understand it, you have recently received unprotected oral sex on two occasions outside of your ongoing relationship, once about 6 weeks ago and once again about 3 weeks ago. About a week ago you had extensive testing for STIs, including a HSV blood test and all results are negative but you continue to be troubled with guilt over your infidelity. You have had some soreness and tingling, first at the tip of your penis and, more recently around other parts of your body. This morning you noted a small amount of clear discharge at the tip of your penis on awakening.
In this situation, the likelihood that you acquired any STI is incredibly low. The tests you had for gonorrhea, chlamydia and other common STIs are definitive and can be believed. Some of the tests such as HSV and syphilis blood tests would not detect all recent infections and could take longer to become positive but, when combined with your negative tests which would have detected most infections by now, if present, the fact that you have not experienced any visible sores or lesions makes it unlikely that you were infected. You do not know if either of your partners had HSV (oral or otherwise) and in the absence of lesions, if one or both did happen to be infected but not have lesions, the risk of infection is estimated to be less than 1 in 10,000.
The sensations of tingling you describe are a common finding in persons who are anxious (and guilty) about the possibility of an STI and result from the fact that when we begin to look for symptoms in an area (like the genitals) we often notice sensations that are always present but are overlooked normally. I suspect this is what many of your symptoms are due to.
As for the clear discharge, this too is normal. It is not uncommon and is normal for men to find a small amount of clear penile discharge to be present on awakening- these are normal genital secretions that become more apparent overnight and are sometimes increased and enhanced as the result of normal nocturnal erections.
I would not worry at this time. There is little reason to worry that you have an STI and many reason to not worry. Dealing with your guilt however may be a struggle. EWH
