Strange Penis Rash

Hey guys, I've been searching the web trying to make heads or tails of what I'm experiencing and can't find anything particularly similar.  I'm 30, had unprotected sex with a 21yr old girl about 1 month ago.  Before I had sex with her I was tested for STD's and came up clean.  It was basically a long time (about 2 yrs) before ever having sex again until this girl.  Unfortunately it was unprotected and I was drunk, needless to say :(

Anyway, before we had sex I had noticed some shiney skin on my glans but didn't think much of it.  After having sex the shiney part seemed to be more pronounced and easier to view.  A couple weeks later I've noticed patches of red, shiney, slightly raised skin on only my glans.  These patches are usually skin color in the morning, and change to a more red color towards the end of the day.  They also seem to be shedding skin but at quite a low rate.

IT's been a month now, and I have several patches on my glans, and 3 new patches on my shaft. I first noticed the new patches of red skin on my shaft just a couple of days ago.  I've also noticed my scrotum is completely red.  The patches feel dry or itchy and somewhat painful, like a dull burning pain, but for 90% of the time they feel completely painless.

I am planning on seeing a dr and getting screened for STD's.  I'm really scared this might be seroconversion(sp?) of HIV.  I know that if I get an HIV test though it could possible show up - but I could still be +, so I don't know when to take the HIV test for optimum results.

Anyway, what is your opinions on this?  Any advice would be extremely helpful.

Hi Cowboygeek,

You should definitely get tested for your peace of mind but I have had very similar symptoms for the last two years with no detectable (known) STD's. Like you I have experienced red patches on my penis and my scrotum turned completely red, with an occasional mild burning sensation in my penis. I posted the following comments elsewhere on this site:

Hi shedsomelight, silverbeach,

I really think that there is an unrecognized condition that we are experiencing here. 2 years ago, 2 days after (protected) sex with a new partner I developed red skin around the base of my penis which then spread up the shaft and over my scrotum. Like both of you I tested negative for all the regular STD's. The skin on my penis and scrotum was red, scaly, with flaking skin and some itching and burning sensations. A variety of antifungal treatments were tried, the flaking seemed to stop but nothing stops the redness or burning sensation. Over the period since then the redness has lessened and is now mostly confined to the area covered by my foreskin (I am uncircumcised) though it comes and goes. There is mostly no sensation with the 'rash' but when it is bad there is a burning sensation in one area which seems to be the centre of the problem. This is also the place where the skin seems to scale and harden.
Like you I have asked various doctors and dermatologists and been told not to worry and get on with my life - mostly because I think they don't know what it is. The most qualified person I saw, a dermatologist, diagnosed it as 'exczema'. I simply don't believe that anyone knows what this is, I have repeatedly been told that it is not sexually transmitted but the onset, immediately after sex with a new partner (and I have never had any problems of this sort before) leaves me in no doubt.
Keep asking questions people and let us know if you find anything out - I share your frustration.
