Swollen tonsils for no reason

by MrT85, Nov 05, 2005 12:00AM

I’m a 20 year old heterosexual male and on March of 2004 I had for the first time protected sex with an escort service and had unprotected oral sex (me performing). Now I know that the risks are very very low and since it was also my first time its even lower. Now throughout almost a year and a half I don’t recall seeing any worrying symptoms other than what seemed to me that I got sick more than I usually do but my doctor said there was nothing to worry about. Now about a month I ago I realized I have small bumps on my lips that can only be seen if I stretch my lower lip out, there are probably 15 or so. I got really paranoid and went the doctor who actually didn’t know what they were and said to wait 2 weeks and then come back again.
I got sick twice in September and in October, which I also told the doctor. He said I have nothing to worry about and that when looking for HIV symptoms it depends more on how long I stay sick and also if I have swollen lymph nodes for no reason. My mind was at ease till I woke up the next day and my tonsils were swollen. It’s been 8 days and they are still swollen and I can also feel my other nodes on my neck, groin area but i'm not sure if they are swollen. However, I think the nodes above my collarbone and under my ear and jaw are swollen. The reason i’m very paranoid now is because I’ve never had swollen tonsils or nodes for no reason like this without being sick. I mean I don’t have fever or anything.

1) What should I do and is it normal to have swollen tonsils like this?
2) Is it normal to have white lining when I get up in the morning around my mouth?

Sorry for the long explanation doctor but I really had to get this out cause i’m really worried. And I want to say thank you very much for this service you provide. You don’t know how much I appreciate it.

Thank you

By far the most common causes of swollen tonsils are garden-variety respiratory viruses.  There is nothing in your symptoms to suggest any STD, or any relationship to the sexual exposure you describe (more than a year and a half ago).  This clearly isn't an STD issue, which is the only area I deal with on this forum.  Please continue to follow up with your own doctor.

Sorry forgot to ask this. What might be the reason for having swollen tonsils like this?

Thanks again

If it is garden variety virus, this means this would be my 3rd time getting sick within 2 months and thats not normal. Also, my tonsils do not hurt and are still swollen, thats why i'm worried because i've never had anything like this. About the bumps on my lip can they be warts or oral thrush of some sort?

Thanks again,

Whatever is going on, there is no reason to implicate any STD.  If it is HIV you are worried about, and the escort exposure you describe is your only risk, you can safely forget about it.  But if you want to get tested for HIV to be sure, feel free.  But your symptoms don't suggest HIV and I don't have any suspicion along those lines.

In any case, since neither your sexual risks nor symptoms suggest any STD, it's not a topic for me to address further on this forum.  Sorry.  Follow up with your own health care provider.

Best wishes-- HHH

I deleted your attempt to start a new thread; your new question should have been posted as a comment in this one.  Only a limited number of new threads can be accepted each day; opening a new thread inappropriately prevents others from asking their own questions.

There is no conflict with my original reply and the new information you posted from another website. The sexual exposure you describe was such low risk that the chance your swollen tonsils are due to HIV is just about zero.  Your symptoms do not suggest STD and your questions are not appropriate for an STD forum.
