Symptoms worsen after taking medication

This could be Chlamydia or Gonorrhea or both. Summary- 1) Symptoms on Saturday 2) Took medication on Tuesday evening, 3) Now Thursday morning and symptoms are worse. Please read below.

On Saturday I began to have symptoms of burning when I urinate, a red swollen opening of the penis and some swelling of the glands to either side of the pubic bone.

I had an STI/STD screening on Tuesday evening. I was given 4 Zithromax to take all in one go which I took at 7.30pm and 1 Ciprofloxacin which I took at 10.30pm on the Tuesday. I'm in Ireland so resistance built up to Ciprofloxacin in other countries may not be a problem here.

It is now Thursday morning and the burning when I urinate is worse, the opening of my penis is more red and swollen and I have discharge when I never had it before. One of my eyes is bloodshot is too.

I was told it would take 3 days to heal but do the symptoms not lessen a little bit by each day? Should the burning when I urinate not be a little bit better than yesterday? Or does it take 3 days to kill the infection and then everything heals after that.

I'm worried the medication is not working. Has anybody had the experience where their symptoms got worse a day or two or within 35 hours of taking the medication?

I had the exact same situation as you, literally to the T.  Chlamydia tested positive, took azithro, symptoms got worse, took azithro again, got even worse, took doxy got worse, took levaquin, still no releif. Stopped taking medicine altogether, no change.  Changed my diet, no difference.  Started working out, no difference.  Haven't had sex in over 7 months, and I still dont have a diagnosis!  I'm currently waiting on a semen culture, but I have had negative chlamydia urine tests for about 4 months now.  My meatus is red and swollen.  The first 3 months my prostate was boggy then I had a cystoscopy done which ruled out cystitis but they noticed my bladder was swollen and they checked my prostate at the time and noticed it felt fine.  So now they thought it might be a bladder problem, ruled that out through testing.  THought it was pelvic floor pain, my urine stream is perfectly normal.  Like I said I am waiting on this semen culture but I dont have high hopes for it and I'm pretty much about to give up and call it quits on this whole life thing.  I dont like to not figure things out, and all the 10 doctors I went to dont give a **** so I turn to these forums.  I have taken diflucan in the past as well for like a week, no notice in symptom change.

Like I said, by next week I'll have my results and probably won't be here anymore, but if someone has some insight into this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

You should wait another day and see how you feel after 3 days.  If it's the same, call your doctor back and talk to him/ her about a comination treatment of Doxy with metronidazole (flagyl).  This will treat you for Trich, which should be considered in persistent cases.

I went to my GP as the other doctor in the STI clinic was away. My GP put me on doxycycline. I've only taken it last night and today. Early days but I still feel the same.

I want to give you more background. I was taking 4 antibiotics a day for a week for an ulcer before I got the symptoms of a red swollen opening of the penis and burning during urination. Could I have developed male thrush as a result of taking so many antibiotics? This could explain why my symptoms got worse after taking the STI antibiotics days later.

At the moment the opening of my penis is very red and swollen, I have a clear discharge (not milky), extreme burning when I urinated and one of my eyes is bloodshot.

also call friday and ask if your std tests are back. If you tested negative for chlamydia and gonorrhea, let them know that you have a worsening of symptoms so they can decide if you need further medication or not.

give it another day or two.  IF things get worse or stay the same, go back, you may need another antibiotic.  some times the first line of treatment doesn't work, it depends on what you had.

Thanks for your reply. My issue is that the symptoms have gotten worse since I started to take the medication. If the medication is working then why would the symptoms get worse before getting better?

It's easiest when you just keep adding to your original post instead of making a new one each time. we explain this in our read before posting post on the forum. thank you for your future cooperation with this.

it takes up to a full week for the medication to fully work. I assume you were treated without having results of your std testing back?
