Conceivably yes, you would have been infectious during that interval. But the chance you were infected is too low to be a serious consideration and I see no need for your wife to be tested.
That will wind up this thread. Take care.
Sorry Dr. but i just wanted one last clarification:
Would i have been infectious in the small period of time (3-6 days) after this incident, before I took the round of doxycycline at 1 week (7 to 10 days) after this incident? I didi have unprotected vaginal sex with my wife 2 or 3 times before i was on antibiotics.
From what I have read a chancre/ active infection is necessary to spread syphilis.
That is my last and final question.
Thank you for your help.
Thank you doctor. your very to the point response is actually more reassuring than if you just said no testing necessary. I am happy to move on from this stupid mistake and extremely happy i dont have to ask my wife to get tested...
Oh come on. The answer is obvious and you may not take up forum time and space with nonsense questions that are obvious.
Is testing not necessary for my wife either?
I'm sorry you didn't say that at the outset. That treatment would have aborted syphilis if you had been exposed. Forget testing for it; not necessary. (Even if you had been infected, the drug would have both cured syphilis and prevented the blood test from ever becoming positive.)
Thank you Doctor,
Last question: I did take a 10 day cycle of doxycycline for possible NGU. I did have unprotected sex with my wife a couple of times before I was on the antibiotics. I have learned that doxycycline is treatment for Syphilis also.
The reason I am being cautious is that I am happily married. The las thing i would want is to have given my wife an STD. I still doubt syphilis as i have never seen a chancre or rash on her either.
I still dont believe any testing is necessary for either of us.
I agree you don't need syphilis testing. I only raised it in case you were seeking additional reassurance.
Doctor thank you for your response. Neither my GP nor the NP I saw at my local clinic mentioned anything about Syphilis risk. I know my GP would have said something if he believed there was any risk of infection, I do believe he is an excellent doctor. I was merely looking for reassurance from an expert in the field of sexually transmitted diseases.
I do not believe syphilis testing is necessary but i just wanted your professional opinion.
Welcome the the forum. Judging from your several discussions on various forums, you're having quite a difficult time accepting the scientific evidence and reasonsed reassurance you have had about both HIV and STD risks from the low risk exposure you described there and here.
Syphilis is even rarer in the US than HIV, and almost two thirds of the cases are in gay men; the odds your oral partner had syphilis are thus very low; although it can be transmitted by oral sex, it is rare; and almost all syphilis involving the penis would be obvious by the chancre (open sore) that would show up 3-4 weeks after exposure. Accordingly, it is exceedingly unlikely you acquired syphilis.
It takes 6 weeks for syphilis blood tests to become positive, so if your only test so far was 3 weeks after the exposure, that result is not definitive. For 100% assurance, you could have another blood test. You can expect it to be negative.
If you have another blood test, feel free to let me know the result. But otherwise speculation is pointless, so until then I won't have anything more to say.

I would also like to add that I am a white heterosexual male. And this was my only possible exposure
