Syphilis symptoms and test result

Hi,

I've read in a few places that if you're having secondary syphilis symptoms and you were indeed infected, then a test result would be positive irrespective of the time period after infection. Is this a true statement?

I've had a negative igg/igm result at 8 weeks and am concerned about symptoms, but am wondering that a test with secondary symptoms will ways be positive.

Thank you.

My syphillis test came back negative so what a relief. The aches and pain in my joints and muscles appear to be getting worse, however. And they seem to be all over my body, especially in my groin, legs and ankles. But have been in my shoulders and arms too. I have a dull ache that comes and goes in both eyes. Googling has led me to look at reactive arthritis. I did have a penis swab which showed signs of NSU 7 days after my encounter which was treated with a single dose of 4 tablets, for chlamdyia. The urine test at the time didn't show a chlamydia infection but as it was only 7 days it may not have been detected. Could my reactive arthritis diagnosis be correct? If so, will it just go on its own? And can reactive arthritis be caused by non STI infections? Thanks again for all your help.

I agree Grace. The last test I had was back within a day so to have to wait 3 days is a little frustrating and very worrying at such a stressful time. I'm in the UK so no holiday here. Happy 4th July!

My two spots on the neck line are now a rash of many red spots. I'm still waiting for my syphilis test and have been told to call back in 2 days. As its a private test I expected the result back within a day and its now the second day. I can't help thinking that it was a positive and it's getting  retested. The nightmare never ends.

these don't sound like std related issues at all. follow up after the holiday with the dermatologist as needed.

I know you've all told I didn't need to, but I had another Syph test today. results tomorrow. I also had an examination of my penis. I pointed out a red patch on the base of penis and scrotum which is sometimes sore and slightly itchy. Especially after "using" my penis - I'm assuming from irritating the area. I have taken Flugonazole tablet and applying anti fungal cream as recommended by the doctor.

Another new symptom today - two red spots on my neck, where the deep inferior cervical glands are. I had two spots on the other side of my neck a bit further back last week, which are now going. What could this be!?

I also continue to get red hands, especially in the evening and when they're warm.

Many thanks again for your continued answers.

when you contract 5th's as an adult, it's pretty nasty from what friends I know who contracted it tell me.  easy to get tested for 5ths and it wouldn't show up on just routine blood work. you could very well have a normal white count with it and if they didn't do a differential to see a viral shift, it wouldn't look abnormal at all.

follow up with the dermatologist and if these sorts of pains continue, a rheumatologist wouldn't be a bad idea either.

You are going have to speak to a Dr as this is outside of this forum. This is a STD forum.

An update: My son was diagnosed with Fifth Disease around the same time I had my risky encounter. Could my symptoms be explained by me catching the disease? I have read some interesting anecdotal evidence online about the wide ranging symptoms of adults with this disease. However, all the clinical professionals I have mentioned fifth disease to have discounted it as a cause of my symptoms. I had a full blood count done and nothing showed. Would fifth disease, or the impact on my immune system show up ins a full blood count? Thanks.

Hi all. Many thanks for your continued answers. This is my only thread on my syphilis concerns. The clinic I attended recommended re-testing for syphilis at 12 weeks. Why would they say that when everyone says tests are conclusive at 6 weeks.

An update on my symptoms... I'm now having pains in various parts if the body including groin, elbow and neck. I can feel a painful lump just above my right groin. My left neck has pain but I can't tell if the nodes are swollen as I'm not medically trained. My rash like symptoms have gone on my palms and chest but the pain in what I believe to be my lymph nodes are now freaking me out! Could this all be due to stress, another unrelated illness or an STD!?  Thanks.

you don't have to repeat your syphilis testing at the 12 week mark.  it's low risk you'd contract syphilis in general as well as your initial testing was negative.

Thanks Grace. If it wasn't for this site I'd be going insane. You're a real help. I'm still getting tested this week. I will look at the dermatologist route after I'm 100% certain it's not an STD.

no reason to think you have syphilis. you waited long enough for your test results to be accurate.

have you seen the dermatologist yet?

also anything that disappears in 10 minutes, isn't worrisome at all.

Hi again. I'm still not over my scare with syhilis. I did have a negative test at 8 weeks but continue to get new symptoms. I had a red or brown mark on my palm that stayed for about ten minutes before disappearing. Can a syphillis secondary rash do that, or do they stay around for much longer? Thanks.

Thanks for the prompt replies. I'm just hoping my symptoms are due to anxiety. I will retest for syphilis at 12 weeks just to be sure and will get my symptoms checked out a GUM clinic. But as you say it's unlikely to be an STD. Just wish the symptoms would go away so I can stop worrying.

Symptoms not syphilis. Situation would doubt syphilis.

Not sure but doubt a STD. I would see a dermatologist if you still have the skin issues.

Unprotected oral both ways with CSW. I had a spot in my groin two weeks after incident which went within a week of me noticing it. I've since been having the symptoms I described. I also had pains in my wrists, elbows and fingers which appear to have subsided now. I've been tested for hiv at 8 weeks too. Negative.

Sore and uncomfortable skin in my groin, armpits and backs of knees., which sometimes itches a little  And occasional burning in my skin in other parts of my body. Especially on my back. My hands are often red and clammy, especially late in the day and at night. My skin marks quite easily when I scratch it. Ive also been having some eye pain, but nothing really bad and it might be related to my contact lenses. I know not traditional symptoms but I want to rule syphilis or any other STD out for that matter. Thanks for your input. Could it be anything other than syphilis?

Thanks Vance2335. I've been recommended to re-test at 12 weeks, but am wondering if that's required if I've tested negative with suspected symptoms. Thanks.
