if you had protected sex and no chancre appeared after could you still have caught syphilis or does a chancre appear 100% of the time.

what I have gathered through other searches on the Internet is simply this:  syphilis can be passed on through oral sex, but it is rare.

-----------Syphilis can be transmitted in either direction by oral-genital contact, but it's rare. ----------

Really an impossible question to answer.

Syphilis is rare in developed countries and does not effect the mouth all that often and when coming into contact with a syphilis sore only about 1/2 the time the infection is passed on. But unprotected oral sex does pose a risk.
