TPHA negative

Hello,  many years ago, about 6 years ago,  I had a sexual relation and was exposed to STD.

I tested for hiv,  etc and everything was negative and ok.

My answer is about syphilis. I tested last year (5 years after the single exposure) for syphilis with TPHA (passive hemmaglutination)  and was negative.

The doctor told me all STD were negative and ok.

It is clear that I dont have syphilis but CAN I BE SURE THAT I HAVE NEVER HAD SYPHILIS with this test?

I want to be sure that I never had this STD, apart from knowing that I dont have it now. I was never treated and I think that I never had it, but I Want to be sure. The risk was this only exposure with a woman 6 years ago.

Thank you very much for your help. I am sorry for my English.

Welcome to the forum.

It is very atypical to test only with TPHA.  That test normally is used only to confirm positive results on other tests like VDRL or RPR.

However, TPHA is positive in all persons with syphilis more than a few weeks in duration, and then remains positive for life.  Your negative result proves you do not have syphilis and never did.

I hope these comments are helpful.  Best regards--  HHH, MD

"Could this test (TPHA) give false negatives in latent / late syphilis after many years after the single exposure? (6 years ago). "

No. See my reply above:  I haven't changed my mind!

Thank you very much for your help, Doctor.

I don't know why did they test with "passive hemaglutination" (TPHA) and not with other tests (VDRL or RPR).

My doctor just gave me the paper with the results, where you can read "Treponema Pallidum" Negative. Technique: Passive hemaglutination. (I understand this technique is TPHA), it didn't appear any other ratio or numbers, just "Negative".

Your answer really makes me feel better. Only one last question to be 100% sure:

Could this test (TPHA) give false negatives in latent / late syphilis after many years after the single exposure? (6 years ago).

I just want to be 100% sure that I don't have it and never did.

Thank you very much again.
