You just don't know without testing. We can "think" but that is not very accurate. This is how these things spread. Someone has it but doesn't want to go to the doctor because of fear. It stems from the stigma attached with std's. But it is very common. People have it and do not know it, spread it... In the mean time no one gets tested. It is a bad cycle that can be managed and prevented.
grace, I didn't visit the doctor because I wanted to give it some time and see if they would recede... The sores were gone by this past Wednesday, and I don't feel any pain or see any scarring. Do you think they were herpes? Or just canker sores?
oral herpes is very common. I'm sure your parents know that you are smooching boys at your age. It's far more likely to be hsv1 orally than anything else since you mention this fellow had what sounds like a cold sore at the time.

how concerned should I be? as in, do I need to be really worried if i'm not very sure? also, I don't know where to go.. i'm 17 and I really cannot tell my parents about this.

you need to go and be seen and get them cultured if you suspect they could be herpes.
