Tonsillitis from swimming pool or oral sex

Doctor,
Recently, living in Japan, I had a few unfortunate physical encounters with a Chinese girl here. We had unprotected sex once with my ejaculating outside of her vagina. We also gave each other oral sex in a separate occasion. A week  after oral sex(during which there were no physical encounters with her)it was a Friday and after getting home from my job, I had the typical end-of-the-week work fatigue, but I decided to go for a swim anyway. It was downpouring rain during my 10-minute bike ride to the pool. I swam for about 30 minutes in the indoor pool and accidentally swallowed some of the chlorinated water and got some in my mouth as I was breathing. The day after swimming, my throat started to hurt. It hurt to swallow a bit, and got worse throughout Sunday. I could go to work (at a junior high school where I teach English), but it was too difficult to go on Tuesday. I had no fever, but everytime I swallowed, it hurt. I saw an English-speaking doctor who just thought it was a cold the couple times I went to him. He referred me to a throat specialist (went to on friday)who told me it was tonsillitis and it should get better soon. Sure enough, it got better pretty quickly the same day. So the pain lasted for about 4-5 days total. Should I assume this was caused by the combination of my fatigue and my swimming and swallowing some water at the public swimming pool the previous day? Or should I be concerned it was from oral sex a week before my throat started to be sore? My partner says she has no stds, and she's fine. I've been feeling fine since my throat stopped hurting. Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Forum.  I suspect you had tonsilitis, just as the doctor said.  Statistically your risk of penile gonorrhea following unprotected vaginal sex is higher than your risk for gonorrhea of the throat. Further. most gonorrhea of the throat is asymtomatic.  You have little to worry about.  EWH
