Trichomonas testing and discomfort from HPV

by narfle, Dec 01, 2008 05:01PM
1.  Is there a reliable test for a man to take for trichomonas if there is no discharge present?  What is this?

(A little background before my next questions)  5 months ago I cheated on my spouse (single instance and I wore a condom, there was mutual touching of genitals).  I had tests at 2 weeks, 1 month and 5 months for HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilys, HIV and herpes (plus a doctor put me on a preventative course of doxycycline for 10 days 1 week after exposure).  All tests were negative at each stage.  I assume that I can consider these a closed issue at this point?  (the chlamydia and gonorrhea were urine tests)  During this time period I had no discharge or sores.

Just a week ago my wife was diagnosed with HPV (I believe type 16 as it was detected during a PAP smear and she was diagnosed with mild dysplasia, and she tested positive with the HPV test done at the time), at the same time i started to feel a noticeable tingling discomfort on the tip of my penis.(not quite burning but strong enough to not just be in my head) and a single small white bump on the ridge of my penis.  The bump I assumped was either from the HPV or just a bump.  I could have contracted the HPV from the woman I slept with or just have gotten it earlier (as could my wife) we have only been married three years.

The PAP test did not detect a trich infection and I had a urine test done (results given 30 minutes later so I assume they just looked at a sample under a micrscope) that was also negative for trich.

She has had some itching on the vagina but no discharge or pain during intercourse.  I have the tingling/mild discomfort on the tip of my penis.  Could these just be from the HPV?  Based on this history what is the probability of trich being able to be present?

I don't expect you to address my personal life stress here, i'm just looking to get a better perspective on trich (a lot of confusing info on the web) .

Your risk of trich from protected sex is very, very low.  There are no widely used, well standardized tests for trich in  men.  On the other  hand there are many causes of vaginal itching in women and if your wife has been tested and trich was not seen, you really have nothing to worry about. the issue of you having trich is a closed book.

As far as your wife's dysplasia and positive HPV test, this could very well and likely does represent an infection acquired years in the past and is unlikely to be related to your recent encounter.  HPV in men and women is typically asymptomatic. On the other hand, guilt and concern is often symptomatic.  My advice is to not worry, to work on moving on.  It is just about certain that you do not have trich and the probability that you gave your wife HPV is low.  EWH

My wife had the PAP smear and the HPV test I don't know for sure if she was specifically tested for trich or if that is just part of the PAP smear.  I had the trich urine test done after she received her results.

Thank you for your comments and I will put this behind me and put my energy into working on the marriage and why this happened in the first place.

HPV

are there any precautions with our daughter (1 year old) to make sure she does not get HPV from us during bath time or changing diapers?  I know probably a silly question but I'd rather understand this as well as I can.

No, no precations for your infant daughter.  Normal parenting activies, including changing her diapers will not put her at risk. EWH

Would trich show-up in a PAP smear and could HPV cause irritation to the tip of the penis?

No more questions for me on this subject after this.  Thank you for your help.

Trich is sometimes detected by PAP smear but it is not a terribly sensitive method for diagnosis of trich.

It would be most unusual for HPV to casue irritation or dicomfort. eWH

Does your first opinion on trich still stand knowing that she only had the PAP done (not specifically looking for trich?  My test was negative but I do have this discomfort on the tip of my penis which is rather odd.  It didn't show up till 4.5 months after.

Just as a note I have had a fluttering and building of pressure in teh prostate area over the last year which i'm planning to have checked out in a regular physical soon. Don't know if an inflammed prostate could cause these symptoms.

Thanks again for the help.

I forgot to mention that during the urine test they tested for white blood cells WBC Esterase and it was negative.

yes my opinio doe shold even if the PAP smear was not done specifically looking for trich.

I doubt that your symtoms are due to prostatitis.

I will now remeind you that you said there would be no more questions.  Time for this to end.  Take care.  EWH
