I have had what is called a UTI, and went to my doctors who confirmed  this and gave me a course of antibiotics - 2 a day for 7 days. After the course had finished the burning symptoms had disappeared. I felt great, however I was due on my period (I use tampons) and after this the symptoms re-appeared. I went back to my doctors a second time and gave me more antibiotics, this time 4 a day for 7 days. I have nearly finished these but the burning sensation when peeing is still occuring. Could there be an underlying problem, such as an STI/STD?

A urinary tract infection is an infection in the bladder and possibly the urethra.  It can be caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria in the body, or by a bacteria entering the body.  It is NOT an std.

If you are all good now, then you don't need to go back to the doctor.  (Sorry, I misread that the first time.)

A UTI isn't sexually transmitted, and you do need to go back to your doc for follow up since you have symptoms again.
