Urethritis

I recently developed a urethritis after my girl friend had a bladder infection. My doctor treated it with zithromax (a Tri-pack). While the discharge became clear within a couple of days, there is still a small amount of clear mucuscy discharge and mild burning. How long can these symptoms last? Was the treatment ineffective? The culture did not show gonorrhea or chlamydia. My doctor is a GP and thinks as long as the discharge isn't purulent I should just wait for the symptoms to get better.
