Valtrex

by livinglife1028, Oct 24, 2007 10:52PM
I have just been diagnosed with HSV2.  I have never had an outbreak but went to have my first STD test and the test came out positive.  The person I spoke to at the clinic said that unless I have an outbreak there is no need for me to take an anti-viral medication.  I am quite concerned and would like to start taking Valtrex as a pre-caution.  Can I start this without having an outbreak?  Also, I see that I can buy it online for alot cheaper.  Can I just buy the prescription online?  My next doctors appointment is not until the end of November.  Please advise.  Thank you!

If you can get a copy of your test results and post the numeric results here for me - I can make sure you were properly tested.

If you haven't already - be sure to watch the patient counseling video and read the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com. Both are terrific resources to help you learn more about your herpes.

So why do you want to start antivirals?  You don't have to ever, ever, ever take them if you don't want  to. Do you have a regular partner? have they been tested yet to know their status?

I advise getting a prescription from your regular doctor if you decide that antiviral therapy is the right choice for you.  You can fill it thru a local pharmacy or thru a reputible online source like drugplace.com.

Hi Grace,

Thank you so much for your help and your reply.  My test has no numerical results. I went to a free clinic and I tested negative for everything else except HSV2, which came out with a HIGH POSITIVE result.  I do not doubt the test results because 10 months ago, I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend and then after 2 weeks, a blister came up.  He has not had a recurrence since then and his doctor was unable to diagnose him then because the lesion had already healed nor was his blood drawn.  I have already done my investigating and I know who I got it from.

But now that I am confirmed to have the virus, I would like to take Valtrex as a pre-caution even if I have no outbreaks.  Is that ok?  I have ordered Valtrex online and it should arrive soon.  I read from another thread that I can take one Valtrex/day  as my dosage and that it is safe.  Also, once I start taking it but continue to not have outbreaks can I choose to not continue the medication?

Thanks again so much!

I'm guessing you are paying quite a bit for valtrex thru an online resource without any doctor's prescription :(   I would've never ordered it online until having shopped around locally and done some homework personally. Not sure what website you used but many of them aren't trustful - don't hesitate to call your local pharmacy  and/or your insurance company and ask them if the website you used is trustworthy or not before taking the medication.

If it's too much for valtrex locally - look into acyclovir instead. It's available as a cheap generic - will probably run you around $30/month suppressively thru walmart type stores or you can get 6 weeks worth of suppressive therapy with it for around $25 thru drugplace.com's deal with the herpes homepage if you get a prescription for it from your doctor.  Famvir is also now available as a generic but 1 - it's still pricier than acyclovir and 2 - it's been shown not to be as effective in reducing transmission to a partner if the infected partner is asymptomatic for hsv2.
