Warts and Genital Warts, the same character?

Hi Doc,

I don't know if you remember me, i've been a subscriber since 2007 and has been asking and reading forums and advices from you ever since, and it really helped me a lot..  Thank you so very much.

I'm about to get married soon and have few concerns regarding my case.

I would want to know if Genital warts and regular warts (face, neck, hands) have the same characteristics.

My last treatment was 9 months ago and was clear since... is it safe to say thay im less contagious already and the chance of recurrences are slim already?

My questions regarding warts and gw are:

1.) most old people have warts all over the face and hands due to old age and failing immune system.  Will I have my GW back when i get older? the same as the Warts that will be present in my face and neck? Im Asian and most of us have warts in our face and neck when we get older the same with my parents and grand parents.

2.) I know that they belong to different HPV family, but why's the warts in some part of the body, specially in the face and neck area keep coming back after treatment?  Does GW have the same characteristic?

My fiance decided to take the HPV vaccine.  Is this too late since we've already have sexual contact?  Am i as contagious now as before when i have lesions present?

You have been asking mostly anxiety-driven questions about warts on this and the Dermatology forum for almost 3 years.  This will have to be the last one.

1) Where in heaven's name did you get the idea that "most old people have warts all over the face and hands"?  That is simply untrue.  Warts are increasingly rare as persons age and are extremely uncommon in elderly persons.  Although skin texture changes and various bumps and spots are common on the face and hands of older people, almost none of these are warts and they are unrelated to HPV.  And it is rare for old people to have recurrences of genital warts they had when young, so you have no worries there.

2) Both genital and non-genital warts typically do not return once they clear up.  As far as I know, there is no difference in the recurrence rate of genital warts versus common warts of the hands, feet, etc.

3) You have asked this question before with answers from Dr. Hook and, I believe, Dr. Rockoff.  As you should already know, your fiance probably was exposed to your genital HPV infection before she ever got the vaccine.  If so, she probably was infected, whether or not she developed visible warts.  In that case, her infection has probably gone away by now.  If by luck she had not caught your HPV infection before she was immunized, she is now protected from it.

I am quite concerned over your mental health.  It is not normal to be so obsessed over such a minor health problem as warts, even when they are recurrent.  You might benefit from counseling about this.  I suggest it out of compassion, not criticism.

Finally, by my count this is your 8th question on this forum since December 2006 (33 months), an average of a question every 4 months -- not counting others on the Dermatology forum.  As you have been told before, the limit is 2 questions every 6 months on each of the professionally moderated forums.  This is the last one that will be accepted.
