What could it be?

What could it be?

About 3 mos ago I had sex w/someone I barely knew (3 times). A couple of weeks later I went to the health department and got tested. Came back positive for chlamaydia, they gave me one dose of
something and said i'd be fine. The minor pain i felt seemed to diminish but not go away. Now, its a different feeling. My penis feels like it would be sore if i touched it, yet when I touch it, there is no pain.  There maybe a mild redness around the head, but  I cant tell. It doesnt seem to be getting worse, but it isnt going away either. Also, I noticed a couple red bumps (1 below my belt line, 1 in my pubic hair). I've always gotten a bump hear and there
nothing would alarm me if i hadnt had chlamida except for this constant "sensitive feeling". What do you think it is? What type of
doctor should I see? I also drank a few beers the day i was treated for chlamydia, could this have offset the treatment?
Thanks for any info.

Your subtle symptoms could be due to continuing chlamydial infection.  That's not especially likely, but not impossible.  Undoubtedly you were treated with azithromycin (trade name Zithromax), with which single-dose treatment is highly effective against chlamydia, but it isn't perfect; infection persists in up to 5% of cases.  (The beer makes no difference.)  Some people with chlamydia or other urethral infections experience subtle symptoms that don't mean anything.

But since it's been going on for a couple of months, I suggest you recheck with your health care provider for a repeat chlamydia urine test.  This is becoming routine anyway:  because of persistent infection and a high risk of reexposure,  "rescreening"--retesting after 2-4 months--is increasingly recommended by experts for all persons with chlamydia or gonorrhea.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
