Worried about STDs not previously checked for?

by daver90, Jan 04, 2008 08:34AM
Hi doc, my risks involve only ever recieving handjobs as well as just brief touching of the anus at massage parlours many years ago, a few times 5-6 years ago. I have been tested for everything except herpes, HPV, and trich because in Canada, knowledge of an available herpes Western Blot blood test is not so widespread. I was wondering if you could assess my risk for acquiring any of these diseases, I have been experiencing what seems to be proctitis for many months now (ie. loose stools, inflammation and irritation of the rectum, blood on toilet paper following a bowel movement) and was wondering is this could in fact be do to any STDs in my rectum. With regards to trich, I had been on Keflex for 12 days for a staph infection, would keflex for this amount of time be sufficient to treat trich if I did indeed have it.
Thanks

Your risk is at or near zero.  Hand jobs are safe sex and STDs are not transmitted that way.  Similarly, for a person to touch your anus is of no risk to you.  Finally, the time interval you describe is so long ago that any STD that might have been there likely would have been cleared by your own host defenses.  STDs are not something you need to worry about, based on your description.

Regarding your questions:

While the symptoms you describe could be caused by rectal STDs, your exposure history is in no way compatible with this. Proctitis and rectal irritation has many causes, ranging from something as simple as hemorrhoids to chronic illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease.  The best way to sort this out is to have your problems evaluated by an experienced clinician.

Keflex has no effect on trichomoniasis.

Hope this helps.  STD risk-zero.  See a clinician for evaluation of other causes. EWH
