Worried...Oral Sex

HHH:
First of all, thanks for this form, it is very helpful and your honest feedback is great.

My situation.  I am a man, I was out one night about 4 weeks ago and my better judgement was no where to be found.  I was roaming an adult store, long story short, I ended up recieving extremely brief oral sex from another man.  It lasted about 10-20 seconds before I freaked out. I haven't been having a ton of symptoms and think most are guilt and anxiety since I am married and I don't want to pass anything on.

I went to the doctor at about three weeks and told him I thought I was having some discharge, he did the swab test and it came back two days later negative for Gon/Clam.  He did put me on doxycycline for 1 week just in case I had a bacterial infection. I was not terribly confident since he pretty much said no big deal and the only thing I could conceivably catch was Gon/Clam.

My main question is regarding syphilis, I noticed a tiny bump on the shaft of my penis on the top side toward the head, it is the size of a pinpoint and completely flat, almost looks like a mole when I stretch it.  I guess I may have not normally even noticed it but now I am reading and worried about syphilis even though the "dot" is so tiny and many of the pictures I see show a larger sore.

I know you get many people that are worried and probably just guilt ridden but I would like to know about the syphilis question above and how often STD's are passed to the insertive male partner in oral sex.  Still a little worried about HIV but your postings in archives ease the pain a little.  Thank

The spot you describe doesn't sound remotely like syphilis, so stop worrying about it.  If you had established syphilis, though, a week of doxycycline probably would be effective.  2 weeks is recommended, but there is no good scientific evidence that 2 weeks is better than 1 week.

Thanks.  One last question and I promise you will never hear from me again.  If that small sore I mentioned was in fact syphilis and I started the 1 week of doxycycline about 6 days after it appeared, would it still be in the incubation stage or would it have progressed?  I may just quit worrying about it and if it worsens go back to the doc.

Thanks again, very much appreciated.

Two weeks of doxycycline is required to treat established syphilis, but 1 week is effective against incubating syphilis.

Thanks a million, seems to help more to at least hear from an expert like yourself!

One question since you mentioned the doxy and syphilis.  Would the one week dosage take care of the syphilis, if remotely present?  Or would I need more than one week of dosage?

Thanks again!

hey there! don't freak, sounds like a little nodule of some sort. if you are that worried, as your doctor to check it out, or even do a biopsy. (my x-husband had many of those, and doc's said they were just calluses. good luck

You already have predicted my response!  In addition to the reassurance your doctor has already given you, and what you have read on this forum, you really shouldn't lose any sleep over the chance of HIV.  Your doc was mostly right about your risks; there was risk of gonorrhea, but not chlamydia.  The risk of syphilis was low, and doxycycline would treat incubating syphilis, if present.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
