Different tests take more or less time for results to be generated or reported, and it also varies widely from one lab to another. Increased time does not imply a worse outcome. Anyway, the urine-based tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia do not grow the bacteria; the tests are based on a simple biochemical reaction in the urine. Your results are going to be negative.
Frequent urination is not usually a sign of urinary tract or kidney disease. More common causes are increased fluid intake (sometimes unconcously), certain metabolic conditions (e.g., diabetes), and -- probably most common of all -- anxiety or other stress. No STD causes increased urine volume.
Work with your provider about the causes and possible treatments. But assuming gonorrhea and chlamydia tests are negative, you can be sure this you have no STD or anything else you caught during your sexual encounter 3 weeks ago.
No STD is likely to be the cause of your symptoms. This sounds mostly like heightened anxiety, magnifying the minor discomfort of normal body sensations -- especially since you have noticed the symptom is less prominent when your mind is on something else. Although STDs that infect the urethra (gonorrhea, chlamydia, nongonococcal urethritis) can cause uncomfortable urination, that symptom generally occurs only during urination (and is felt at the tip of the penis); and is usually accompanied by abnormal discharge of pus or cloudy mucus from the penis. Your normal urinalysis shows no other urinary infection is responsible for the symptoms and also is reassuring against STDs.
Of course I have no way of knowing for sure you didn't acquire one of those STDs; testing is the only way to be certain. Perhaps the additional urine test you mention is for gonorrhea and chlamydia; if not, ask your doctor about such testing. You can expect negative results. As already suggested, I doubt you have an infection of any kind.
I hope this helps. Best wishes-- HHH, MD
Dear Dr. Hansfeild,
Just to clarify, my GP did request along with the urinalysis a Chlamydia and Gonnerrhea test. Is this why the results are taking longer? Does that mean that there is a bacteria and that the lab is growing it (Chlamydia and Gonnerhea)? In short is this normal that they did not have the results after the 48 hours? Questoning what the lab procedures are. Thanks again, and yes anxiety and stress probably play a key roll. i Yii Yii!
