This doesn't sound like herpes or shingles.  (No, HSV-2 does not cause shingles.)  Your rash sounds more like tinea cruris (jock itch), erythrasma (a bacterial skin infection that often occurs in the groin), or perhapss another infection.  I can only speculate as to the cause, except to say again it doesn't sound like herpes.  You should see a health care provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

Try using Cortizone 10 cream, it has to be the cream and not the gel due to the sensitivity of the skin in the genital region.  I guarantee it goes away in less than a weeks time.  But i would still see a GP if I were you. The cortizone should do the trick.  I played sports in highschool and had a problem with tinea cruris, aka jock itch.  My derm told me to use the cortizone and it did the trick.
