concern over std

I had protected vaginal sex on May 4, 2010, but had unprotected oral sex where I performed cunnilingus on a female the same day, same partner. About 10 days later I developed a sore throat and it looked like blisters as those similar to strep throat. I went to the doctor and she said it was allergies and the drainage down the back of my throat. I have never had a sore throat last this long. Could it be gonorrhea of the throat or acute hiv symptoms? I have had some fatigue, but it seems to come from anxiety over this. She checked my lymph nodes and said they were fine. Any help would be appreciated. The strep test was negative. Could it be mono? Could it be tonsillitis? This morning, May 24, I had diarrhea and my appetite is not as good. A person in the STD community said it could be HPV, HSV, or syphillis. It appears as if my body is fighting some type of infection, although it could just be my paranoia. I am a male by the way. I have had allergies for years and have never had a sore throat last this long.

I'm sorry, this really is getting a bit too far out. Some primary care providers do an excellent job of distinquishing skin tags from warts, others do not.  Given your high level of anxiety, perhaps a dermatologist is the best course.

Would you recommend getting examined and if so by who? Should I go to the health department where I got the other tests done or to primary physician, or dermatologist? Does it sound like a skin tag? it is not directly in the crease where my leg meets my groin, but just slightly on the side towards my groin

while I obviously have not examined you, this is an unusual location for a genital wart and does not sound like it.  EWH

I just wanted to let you know that the hiv test and syphillis test both came back negative. Thanks for your reassurance though. The throat has not changed, but I am now seeing an ENT specialist. One last question. About 2 weeks ago I noticed what looks like a loose flappy piece of skin, the same color as my skin unless it gets aggravated and then it turns slightly red. It is located in the crease where my upper thigh attaches to my groin. I am thinking this is a skin tag and not a genital wart. Am i right? It doesn't look cauliflower like.

Please re-read my answers. This is a repetitive, anxiety driven question. There will be no further answers.  EWH

Do you think the results of the 6 week test would be definitive? My most recent exposure was on May 4th and I was tested on June 17. That would be a total of 44 days.

You do not have an STD or HIV. This may be your anxiety or perhaps some other pharyngeal (throat) process but it is not an STD and it is not due to something you caught during your exposures of concern.  .  EWG

I am about to lose my mind. My throat is still sore. I have taken antibiotics, an oral mouthwash, and nothing seems to be working. I tested negative for gonorrhea and took an HIV test last week. The results won't be back for until around July 1. I have lost 6 pounds in two weeks. I think it is from worrying though. I didn't tell u in earlier threads that I received unprotected oral sex twice being a few weeks before the May 4 incident. Is it just my anxiety? Please help. Would HIV acute symptoms last this long?

These are normal parts of the tongue (taste buds) that you have not noticed before.  End of discussion.  EWH

One last question and this will be it. Yesterday I noticed some bumps on back of my tongue. They are pinkish in color and slightly raised. Would this be oral warts? There are about 3 in number. If I had oral warts, would they be all over my tongue and mouth?

This will be the last answer as I am getting tired of repeating myself. The chance that you have oral gonorrhea or, for that matter, any other STD is very, very low.  Oral gonorrhea does not cause symptoms in most people who have it.  It is far more likey that you have a lingering viral infection.  If you are worried about gonorrhea, get tested.  I predict it will be negative.

This will conclude this thread.  EWH

I am halfway through the antibiotic and part of the way through the decongestant. The only symptoms I have are a sore throat with pus on the tonsils and back of throat and mucous where I have to keep swallowing more often than usual. The antibiotic doesn't seem to be working and I keep thinking this is pharyngeal gonorrhea. Should I be tested? The throat doesn't show any signs of improvement.

This is not an STD. Levofloxacin would kill many but not all strains of gonorrhea.  You may need a decongestant.  If not improving, you should let your regular doctor know and see him/her again.  EWH

I went to the doctor on Friday, May 28 and he said I had a sinus infection. He prescribed me Levaquin, but the sore throat has not changed any and it is May 31. How long before I start to see a change in sore throat with the antibiotics? If by chance I did have oral gonorrhea, would the levaquin cure it? With the sinus infections I have had in the past, I have had discolored nasal discharge, but drainage with this sinus infection seems to be more mucus down back of the throat. He gave me a 10 day dosage of the Levaquin

A lingering virus (they don't all resolve in the same amount of time) or your first case of tonsilitis.  This is not a diagnosis to make over the internet. If it is worse agian tomorrow, I'd suggest you see your doctor.   eWH

What else could it be? My throat has hurt more today than other days. I don't have a history of tonsillitis.

I wouldn't give it another two weeks.  If it is not better in a week, or if it get's worse, I advise you to return to the docotor you've already seen.  Having the perspective of having seen someone before is often quite ehlpful.  EWH

Thanks for the information. That makes me feel more assured. If my sore throat doesn't improve in the next 2 weeks, what should I do?

Welcome to the Forum.  Your vaginal exposure is not an issue as it was condom protected.

As for orals sex, oral sex is an inefficient way to transmit STDs.  Of the bacterial STDs only gonorrhea is acquired through oral sex; chlamydia is not and without an obvious sore or lesion on your partner’s sites of contact with your mouth, the chances of syphilis and herpes is likewise tiny.   Oral gonorrhea is typically asymptomatic and oral herpes causes lesions on the lips as well as in the throat.  Besides being unlikely on a statistical basis, syphilis does not cause pain at the site of infection.  Even if your partner had an STD (any STD and it is likely she did not), most exposures do not lead to infection.  In your case, you had a single exposure, making transmission unlikely; I would urge you not to worry. If you must, you could go to your local STD clinic or health care provider to be tested at this time.  The tests will be negative and in my opinion, you do not need testing at all.

It is far more likely that you have a plain old, every day community acquired viral sore throat which is just hanging on longer than usual.  Infections of this sort are often accompanied by diarrhea as well while the STDs you mention would not be.   Such an infection might have been acquired through your activities of daily living and a little bad luck.

Hope this helps.  EWH
