confused and going crazy

Hi
Im really consued about my situation and cant seem to find answers. I have a boyfriend who lives aborad. I see him about every 3 months. It would seem i caught herpes from him about a year ago once we started having unprotected sex (he insisted he didnt have anything). The first time I got redness/irrritation followed by two red patches very sore when urinating, dizziness, a red patch on mt breast lasting about two weeks. My GP said it was prob herpes and prescribed meds. I take this before seeing him but sometimes this works sometimes doesnt. Ive had four or five episodes. I had blood test abroad at 14 weeks; HSV-1 positive (but lifelong cold sores) and HSV-2 positive. On a check-up due to ithciness i recently found out i now have chlamydia. He swears he has been faithful, and has complained of burning when urinating on  and off for a while but his tesy yesterday came back negative. He is waiting for his HSV results.

My questions are 1) Could i have taken my HSV blood test too ealry
2) How can my test for chlamydia be posotive and his negative, he must have given it to me (ive not had a different partner for four years, my test was negative a year ago)
3) would you advise taking lifeling meds for herpes

thank you

well its the unprotected sex (many times over approx three days) whilst he was (looking back) having symptoms followed by a negative first test (me) that i dont understand! surely id have caught it if he had had it?

Unfortunately we have split - i dont feel i trust him anymore, he is angry because i dont trust him.

As usual, the common sense answer makes most sense!  The unprotected period when he was having symptoms seems pretty obvious to me.  But there's no way to know for sure.

Thank you. You may be right about my partner, I dont know what to think; he did complain of burning after sex/urinating early on in our relationship (we've been together about 17 months). There was one period of two-three days where we didnt use condoms prior to my negative chlamydia test - would i definitely have caught it if he really had had it then, or is there any chance i didnt get it then, but got it after the first negative test?

I'm glad for the clarification below!  I was confused before seeing it.

Your symptoms don't sound much like herpes.  If your GP is experienced with genital herpes and was quite certain about the diagnosis, that counts for a lot.  And your boyfriend's belief he doesn't have genital herpes doesn't mean much; most infected people don't know it.

But despite all that, I doubt you have genital herpes, since more than 90% of infected have positive HSV-2 blood tests within 14 weeks; and as you already seem to know, your lifelong cold sores (HAV-1) mean you are very unlikely to ever acquire a new genital HSV-1 infection. If you're still taking anti-herpetic drug, I suggest stopping it and seeing what happens.  If you have another oubreaks, see your doc right away for a culture or PCR test, i.e. within 1-2 days of onset.

As to the chlamydia, clearly your boyfriend is having other partners.  Sorry to be so blunt, but assuming your own sexual history is accurate, it is the only realistic possibility.  He could have a negative test because a) he was treated but didn't admit to it; or b) he had a spontaneous cure before he was tested.  This sort of thing (one partner     positive, the other negative) happens all the time.

So the direct answers to your three questions are 1) probably not; 2) see above; 3) no, not unless and until the diagnosis is confirmed.

I hope this helps. Best wishes--   HHH, MD
