how can i get syphilis

I`d like to get known some facts about syphilis. Most of topics in internet say that syphilis is caused only by sexual intercourse or sometimes by kissing. But I have serious problem. My story looks like this:
I`ve been married for 5 months, everything was OK until one moment when I noticed some sores on my penis. I supposed some infection because my wife some problems. But the sores didn`t want to disappear. I went to the doctor, who diagnosed herpes genitals. I got Heviran, but still I had the same problems. After that, I did tests for VDRL and FTA, FTA-ABS. I didn`t realize that something can be wrong. Me and me wife have known each other for 2,5 year, and during this time, we had a sex only together. My wife did the same tests what me, and it was negative VDRL, FTA, FTA-ABS and TPHA, so it means that she is healthy. And now it is my personal drama. I didn`t hurt my wife, I didn`t have any sex with other woman. But my wife doesn`t believe me, she claims that I had to have and that`s why I have syphilis.
Please, help me, my marriage is going to collapse. Is it possible that I caught syphilis in any other way than sex ? Could I contact with toilets or towels and catch this? Maybe I grabbed somebodies hand and then I touch my penis in toilet? I1m trying to solve this question.
Before my wife, I had one partner in sex and another one just touch my penis for a while. Is it possible to catch it long time ago and after 3 - 4 years to have the first visible symptoms ?
Please help me, my world collapsed, I feel that I lost this wonderful woman.

no you will not get syphilis any other way than from sexual contact.
your wife should repeat her syphilis testing in another month.
were you both tested for syphilis prior to getting married at all?

2. There were 4 sores
3. my VDRL i +++ 1/450
4. I live in Europe, in typical and "normal" country but I spent holiday in Egipt 4 months ago
5. my wife had problem only with tinea
6. the sores were a little bit paintful, it persists about 2 weeks, but disappear after 3 pills of Azitrox
7. I`m sure it is syphilis, my doctor confirmed that

Grace asked me to comment on this, and I can see the confusion.
What was the exact number on your VDRL? That is the titer Vance is asking about. It will look something like 1:16 or 1:144 or even higher. If you have copies of the lab tests (and you should get them) it will be the number right next to VDRL.
You don't mention specifically what problems your wife is having, or how long the sores have lasted, how many you've had, are they painful, etc. You also don't mention where you live, and that's important because there are other infections found in tropical areas (South America, Asia, Africa, etc) that can cause false positives.
If you do have syphilis, it is possible you've had it for a long time (knowing the numbers is important for this), or had it from birth from your mother. Your symptoms aren't sounding like an old infection though, but we need more info on length of symptoms, pain, etc. It's possible you have an old syphilis infection and a new something else.
Hang in there, and I hope your wife does too. Having an STD doesn't always mean someone cheated. It certainly could, but there are a lot of other possibilities too.

I`m confused too. My tests gave possitive results :(
