how can this not be herpes?

Thank you in advance for you reply.

Was exposed to HSV mid Dec., 12 days post had:  flu, stabbing vaginal pain, headaches in back of head, nausea, twitching, discharge, sore legs and buttocks.  Lasted 3 weeks.

Jan:  Follicitis (per doc)

end of Feb:  same thing all over again:  stabbing vaginal pains, headaches, achiness, twitching, headaches, discharge, sore legs and sore bottom of foot.  Very tired, drained.  3 week duration.  In midst of this, boil in major labia (they say possible clogged Barths gland?  lasted 3 weeks and drained.

Mar:  rash on buttocks.  Visual from clinic doc thought herpes or herpes zoster.

I have EVERYTHING that points to herpes, and known herpes exposure as mentioned (no breakout on partner at time, so he says and from what i could see).  BTW, used condom, it broke.

Blood tests:  week 4, type specific Igg, both I & II negative, same with week 8 and week 12.  Awaiting week 16 for final test.

WHAT IN THE WORLD COULD IT BE BUT HERPES?  I have let this go and tried not to dwell on it, and yet these symptoms return.  I never feel right any longer.

Don't know what to do (Inf. Disease doc maybe?).  Keep having problems (mentioned above) that I've NEVER had before in my entire life...

Suggestions?

Delilah, you are entirely right about viral shedding and the potential for transmission when symptoms are absent.  But my conclusion and advice to kimab remains unchanged:  s/he doesn't have herpes.

Your genital herpes likely was due to HSV-1, suggested by acquiring it from a partner's oral herpes.  Most people with genital HSV-1 have no recurrent outbreaks or only a very few of them.  So your declining frequency of outbreaks has nothing to do with lysine; it is the natural course of the disease.  No scientific evidence, either theoretical or experimental, suggests lysine has any effect on herpes.  For persons with recurrent genital herpes of sufficient frequency to require treatment and are taking lysine or other magical treatments, my universal advice is "Stop your drug for a few months and try mine.  Then come back and tell me which one works best."  All of them come to recognize the superiority of "my" treatment.

Happily, lysine isn't known to be harmful.  It is just as safe as the antiviral drugs (which are themselves among the safest of all drugs).  So if you are convinced it is helping, feel free.  But don't worry much about it either way.  Not only will you continue with rare or no outbreaks, but you probably are not shedding virus asymptomatically.  Asymptomatic shedding is rare with genital HSV-1 infection.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

It sounds like herpes to me...you can have herpes and never break out. You can have herpes and never have any symptoms but just pass it to everyone that you sleep with.  I'm not a doctor but this has been my research on it since being diagnosed with hsv 5 years ago.  It may take awhile for your body to build up enough antibodies to the virus to be detected in a blood test and without a lesion to take a culture off you may be getting false negatives.  Like I said..i'm not a doctor....just also infected.  I got it 5 years ago from a cold sore on my husbands lip.  Never in my life even had so much as a cold sore so it was a totally new virus being presented to my body.  I broke out violently. And those of us that live with this..try to know as much about it as possible.  It's a controlable virus.  90 percent of the population deal with it, they just call thiers "fever blisters"..bottom line..they've gotten sick and now the virus is activating.  Same thing happens to us except its on our genitals..and most people that i've noticed..got it from people with no visible symptoms...no lesions..no nothing.  Just cell sheeding while the virus was in remission.

I take 1000mg of lysine a day.  They say it is supposed to help.  I dont get outbreaks very often..once every couple of years but anything to keep it at bay for as long as possible is great to me.
Again..I'm not a doctor and I cant give medical advice.just sharing information that I've learned.  Good luck.

Del.

Negative tests on lesions further suggests you don't have herpes.

Forgot to mention all cultures (on suspicious bumps, vaginal swabs, etc) negative, though doc did not culture rash.  All other std tests, bacterial, yeast, etc., negative.

Actually, your symptoms don't sound very much like herpes to me.  Herpes lesions would be localized to more or less the same area each time they reappear.  In any case, even to the extent some of your symptoms are compatible with that diagnosis, your blood test results rule it out.

Whatever is going on is very unlikely to be genital herpes.  As you suggest, seeing an infectious disease specialist might be a good next step.

Good luck-- HHH, MD
