how is it possible to get hsv2 under these conditions?

by orangesoda, Aug 19, 2009 04:52PM
my boyfriend and i have been dating about a year and a half. it has always been a monogomous relationship with unprotected sex. he has had cold sores before, but other than that no other problems. before he started up with me, he had sex wtih one other person (they were both virgins) and i had 2 previous partners but i was tested for stds at the beginning of the relationship and was negative for everything, including herpes.

i got hsv1 on my mouth a little while into the relationship, probably from my boyfriend when he was asymptomatic. not really a big deal to me now, but to make sure it was herpes and not something else, about 7 months in to the relationship i got a type-specific herpes test.  positive for type 1, negative for type 2.

2 months ago my boyfriend and i took a break from each other, but were not involved with other people. we both agreed to take an STD test before we got back together, partially because he never took one before and we wanted to be completely sure of our health and fidelity. we were both confident that the results of everything would be negative. BUT....

my boyfriend went to a clinic for his test and was told that he tested positive for herpes 1 AND 2. this is weird to me because his history would imply that it's impossible for him to have hsv2, and i had a ton of unprotected sex with him during the 7 month period before i was tested NEGATIVE for hsv2.

another strange thing is, when my boyfriend asked the guy who gave him the results to explain it to him, he told my boyfriend that he didn't know what kind of test was taken, or the numeric results or the antibody count, just that the lab called saying he was positive for both hsv1 and 2. i told my boyfriend to go to another place to get tested because something seems really fishy about the one he just took... what could be an explanation for this? could it be a false positive? i'm just scratching my head here, waiting to get tested myself...
