how safe?

by running5, Jul 14, 2008 05:30PM
I recently gave a guy a blow job using protection. I was careful to roll the condom all the way down and did not see anything unusual.
however, when he was semi-erect I went down deep and may have made skin to skin contact.

My concern is, I had read that condoms do not protect  you as well regarding syphilis for this very reason. I had read ths STD is on the rise, so I wanted to know what you think. I may be paranoid, but i respect and trust your opinions. On that same subject, is it safe to get or give a handjob or kiss regarding syphilis.

Was this a safe encounter?

Oral sex is generally low risk for STD, especially if it is protected.  I see no reason for you to be worried.  Getting syphilis through protected oral sex would be rare.  Syphilis is still not an especially common STD - the risk from a handjob and kissing is not worth worrying about at all - it is practically zero, if not zero.  I believe that the doctors on the expert forum have not seen a case of syphilis contracted through kissing in their many years of experience.  Hope this helps.
Best,
Em

Thanks, this was a first time with another male, I may have been having some remorse.
What you said makes sense and perhaps I was overeacting to some information regarding gay men and syphilis. Sometimes things are unclear, such as ,the differances between oral vs vaginal or anal contact. I just wanted to be safe.

While syphilis is thought to be more common among gay men (I'm not sure how accurate this is), oral sex is still low risk.  I would forget about this and move on :)
Good luck,
Em

I had posted the Doc, awhile after I initially wrote into this forum, and  before you posted back. He said basically the same thing. I feel much better and have moved on and it's good to have learned something in the process. :)
