need prescription for herpes-no health insurance

by needhelp128, Nov 29, 2007 12:58AM
This may be more of an adminstrative question, but I've looked online to find a way to see a doctor and request a suppressant medication.  I've always had medical insurance, but I have not been able to afford it for the last year.  I'm self-employed and well, the real estate market fell out in California (seems worst than other areas of our country - I degress).  I was diagnosed with herpes a couple of years ago by my regular OBGYN with Kaiser.  I can't go back to her for a prescription and I don't know where else to turn.  Do you have any suggestions since I'm lost in the health care world.  I can save the money to see a doctor and pay for my prescription.  I've tried to manage my outbreaks naturally but my stress level is out of control and it's affecting me every month.  Please help me.

If money is an issue then you don't want to be paying the fee's the online doc's charge to give you a prescription!!  call your regular doctor and ask them to write a prescription for you and you can pick it up ( or have it called into your local pharmacy even ). If it's been more than a year since you were last seen by the doctor they might require you to come in and have a routine check up - otherwise they can just give you a prescription if they are willing.

If you can't find it cheaper elsewhere - the herpes homepage has a deal with drugplace.com to offer 6 weeks of daily suppressive therapy with acyclovir for under $25. You can fax your prescription from your doctor to them ( more info on their website - mention HHP to get the discounted rate ).   It pays to check prices at local pharmacies too - they can differ quite a bit. You can also use the costco pharmacy even if you aren't a member and supposedly they are cheap too.

Another option is to go to planned parenthood ( they usually charge on a sliding scale ) and tell them you need a prescription for daily suppressive therapy for a year because your ob's are increasing in frequency.
