oral herpes

by duder250, Aug 03, 2008 12:16AM
about a week after i gave oral sex to a girl i had what looked like a cold sore on my lip. i have had cold sores way before i ever became sexually active but got freaked out because i got one a week after i had oral sex. it went away completely in a couple weeks but came back in the same spot about three or four monthes later. i know that cold sores are a type of herpes but i want to know if this is any kind of std that i should be worried about spreading to anyone else. since it was only one blister and not like a multiple of spreading blisters around my face i want to know if that is still and std. any info would be appreciated.

Yes, you can transmit it to someone else.  You have herpes type 1, and if you perform oral sex on someone else, especially when you have an active cold sore, you could give them genital herpes type 1, which accounts for 30-50% of new genital herpes infections a year.

Its not considered an std, but it can be sexually transmitted.  For more info on this, see the herpes forum.

Yes, all cold sores are caused by hsv1.

Most people get it from a family member as kids, just by a kiss on the mouth.  Others get it as adults from either kissing or oral sex.
