over counter remedy or doctors perscription?

I have not gone to the doctor as of yet but have these following syptoms (symptoms) i have had for the last 2 days: my vagina feels swollen its a little itchy and has a thick white cakey like discharge.I believe this could be a yeast infection? Am I right ? What would be best go to the doctor or over counter remedy? What causes yeast infections? I am a single lady have no children also unemployed and have no health coverage any sugguestions welcome.
