reliabilty of tests

by Dhalsim, Apr 11, 2009 07:24PM
I asked by doctor to check me for STD while I do my blood work.  It is scheduled for 5 and a half weeks after my last sexual encounter.  My question is how reliable is a test, particularly a negative test after 5 and a half weeks.

Well, it depends on what you were tested for.  Your syphilis test will be fine.  If you were tested for HIV, it would have about a 90-95% accuracy.  Herpes is probably about 50-60% accurate.

However, gonorrhea and chlamydia blood tests are not all that accurate at any time, and a urine or swab test should be done to determine if you have an active infection.

i should clarify, they are also taking urine and specifically checking for gonorrhea and chlamydia.

Oh good.  Then your gonorrhea and chlamydia tests will be conclusive.
