Father ..Possible dementia...

Well after my dads last appointment at the VA medical center they want to test him for certain types of dememtia.
Vascular,FTD and possible early alzheimers....My father is an orphan and he/we do not know any of his familial history. He is 66 and is 100% disabled vet(mental) due to being a p.o.w for 19 months during the Vietnam war. He is scheduled for an MRI 12/29. My mom and I took him to his last appointment and some how my health became the topic. The fact that I had brain lesions and my own cognitive/neurological issues were of great interest to my dads doctors.... Maybe after his MRI he will have some answer and maybe I will too......

I worry about my future and my childrens.

My grandfather had peripheal nueropathy and terrible ulcers on his legs, his cognivitive decline was quite fast we didnt see him often because my dad was in the forces.

Anyway finally he was diagbosed with parkinsons.

My father was in xmas island for 2 hydrogen bomb tests. He was diagnosed with lupus and also cryoglobenemia. Just before he died his cognitive problems got worse I felt he didnt even know me but he wasnt diagnosed with dementia.

My fathers Lupus diagnosis was forced on him, because the MOD knew then he couldnt claim he had an illness from 2 hydrogen bombs going off.

I was NEVER convinced he had lupus, and when he died they did an autopsy and I have a letter from his cryo specialist who said there was no signs of lupus in his system.

I hope you get answers for your dad and for yourself. Its a trying and troubling time for you and your family. Big hugs. Mariaxxxx

Thank you...
I actually would like to know whats in my possible future. With all the neurological issues I have it may shed light on my situation.

The only other health issue my dad has is his thyroid or the lack there of. He had a thyroidectomy about 12 yrs ago.He takes synthroid now.

Over the years my mom has learned how to make the most of the benefits. When you know where to look, what to ask and where to go you can get stuff accomplished with the VA. Trust me they dont make it easy.LOL

Take care, Theresa

Yes that must be very difficult to cope with. I know that my grandfather who passed on recently (and was a vet of world war 2) had multiple t.i.a.'s but he retained some degree of mental functioning (which was helped by Namenda) until about the last year of his life. It is good to shed some light on what is going on. I know there are some people that find knowing that they may develop a specific disability in the future (such as Huntington's Disease) to be too distressing and thus avoid getting tested. The more information they have on what is going on the better they will be able to treat it. The VA medical center should assist him with anything he needs such as a home attendant and/or other supports and services. If that's applicable I could give you more information. My sympathies go out to you. I understand the experience somewhat having a close friend whose grandmother had advanced Parkinson's and she had to help her out in her last years.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad.  I've had several friends who had fathers that suffered in that war and it's a hard one to carry through your life.  I do hope that the doctors can find out what is going on and that he can get the right care.  There are meds that can slow it down for some.

Are the docs going to evaluate your symptoms?  I hope so. Hugs, Charley.
