Gluten ?????'s

Hello to All!
I have read alot of post's about gluten from Maria and others of how it is bad esp. for possible MS'ers
So I've just started trying to remove it from my diet and I need to lose some unwanted weight I've gained.
I was wondering if wheat gluten is the same as white bread gluten.?
My family and I have eaten whole grain breads for several years and I read on it that it had wheat gluten.
I've found cereal and crackers and dressing gluten free.
Is there other things suggested that I can watch out for that I'm not aware of that has gluten?

Any further info would be appreciated.

I actually totally agree with what you say about improving our own wellness as i am sure the way we are is how we will cope with what life throws at us.

Hi to all from Greece.
I made it safely, with the normal travel inconveniences and stuff.
The mood down here is negative to say the least, and for some reason,
this type of situation makes me dig deeper into re-balancing my Energy at
the emotional and spiritual levels.
I feel deeply the need to offer my support and help to the people around me, down here.
The one thing that I was attempting to convey to a friend, was to do our best to stay energetically balanced, specially in these hard times.
Then, suddenly, it just clicked!
I have been offering my advice in the this forum, for almost a year and a half, mainly in the physical/chemical/molecular realm,
somewhat neglecting or ignoring  the higher levels of energies that GOVERN these lower forms of energy.
Chakra Balancing is a Wonderful way to address "sticky" situations
in your life, including many persistant health issues, that may have
a- larger than what most think-underlying energetic imbalance.

I had the priviledge in the past to receive training from some amazing
teachers in the Tranformational and Healing Arts , and it has been a true
Blessing in my own life, as it has empowered me to touch the lives of so many others in a very profound way and make a difference.

So please, while pursuing health improvement and wellness with all that you're doing, stay open to this idea that I'm mentioning today.
Do some research perhaps, if not familiar with these concepts, and should you have any questions, let me know.

To tjlmoo, I am being treated for Lyme and Bartonella.  I am a true case of neuroborreliosis (neurologic Lyme) as my symptoms mimiced MS and I have no muscle or joint pain or arthritis.  However, adding in Bartonella with Lyme changes things.  It is known for making the neuro and GI symptoms worse.  I have had a really messed up gut for over 10 months now.  I am definitely getting better, and I am just coming off of 7 months of chronic stomach pain.

Apparently, Lyme and Bart can damage the walls of the intestine, causing "Leaky Gut Syndrome" where particles that are supposed to stay in the intestine instead go throughh the wall of the intestine into the blood stream. For those of us with these symptoms, wheat gluten causes a similar response as with Celiac Disease.  With Celiac, an autoimmune disorder, your own immune cells damage the villi in the intestine wall, causing Leaky Gut.  The effect is the same as with Lyme (digestive problems and neurological symptoms).  This is not true for all Lyme patients.  I know one with no GI problems who felt worse when se took out gluten. Hopefully my gut will fully heal and I can go back to bread and pasta.

If you have a Target near you, that's where I got the Tinkyada brown rice pasta and the gluten free soy sauce.

Dogmum- I can't imagine living gluten free in Italy!  I would have a very hard time avoiding all the bread and pasta!

Great thread!  Just this year I'm trying to switch to gluten free and a version of the primal diet.  Some of you may remember that the dietitian my doctors sent me to put me on a gluten heavy low fat/cal diet at the end of March.  What a disaster.  I was up sick every night for the week that I did it, had a 10 day relapse shortly after, and have had weeping eczema and out of control allergies ever since.  *nightmare*  Anyway, I think a gluten free diet can be a good thing and I'm trying to avoid it as much as is possible living in Italy.

I'm excited to try the gluten free just to have better health and hopefully see if symptoms I have will lessen.
I have lots to read.  I did not know most processed foods have it.WOW!
I will be trying many of the suggetions and definitely the tinkyada brown rice. I will also have to find the gluten free soy sauce you mentioned.

The treatment you are having is it for celiac or lymes disease?
I hope you will have better feeling days ahead and more energy.:)

I, too, have been amazed how many things have gluten in them.  Most processed foods seem to have some form of it.  Actually most processed food isn't good for us, so you're double benefitting by cutting them out.

I am an amateur at being gluten free, only having done it for about 6 months.  I just remember to check labels and look for wheat, barley, rye, semolina, durham, or wheat gluten.  I have also found that most soups and sauces have it, even teriyaki and soy sauce! (I found a gluten free soy sauce!)  Even hot roasted chickens from stores usually have gluten.

I rarely feel energetic enough to cook, so my diet is still rather limited.  My blood tests don't show any sensitivity, so I should be able to go back to eating gluten once my treatment is done.

I have heard that there are surprising sources of gluten, such as a discount store multivitamin that used gluten as a filler.

I agree that the Tinkyada brown rice pasta is good.  I have missed regular pasta, and this is a good substitute. I have had to get used to the change in flavor.  Beware boxed baking mixes.  Every one I have tried so far were terrible and went straight into the trash.  A good recipe recommendation is like gold!

Lots of info to absorb, read and understand. I appreciate all this info because I do want to take care of myself and hopefully lose some weight too!  It couldn't hurt.LOL

I do not know what the Lord has planned for me w/MS appt in June so I need to do all I can for myself and family.:)

Maria,I'm glad you're getting better and I hope the MS doctor can find out about the rash to see if it was shingles or something else.

Lots to learn! I'm also going to ck on the MS diet and about eliminating dairy and certain meats.
I'm also still praying for you and your next MS appt and I hope your job isn't stressing you too much!

I have spent most of my life in commercial agriculture and have always found it interesting that grain harvest brings on serious allergies in about 95% of people. For most people barley is the worst, followed by wheat (I am the opposite) and very few people can get through grain harvest w/o being maxed out on allergy medication, even if they just live in the area and are not working harvest. It just makes sense to me that if the dust in the air makes it so you can't breathe and the grain on your skin makes you more itchy than fiberglass insulation it is probably not a good idea to eat it!!!

Hi i concentrated on the main products I ate. The big ones lol.

Cereal, Bread and Pasta AND Cakes lol. (Being Italian i eat a lot of pasta).

I am sure in the states you must have tons of products that are gluten free.

The bread is horrible sadly, I have found one bread which is ok brown gluten so there are some good ones out there. BUT you can make your own bread if you find a good gluten free flour.

I found this web site, as it gives you the flours that are gluten free.

The breakfast was easy as I found a gluten free oat porridge I like, or a gluten free cornflake, or i have eggs. I use Almond millk which is high in Vitimin E which is what we need for nerve pain and stuff.

The bread I tend to avoid but if i fancy a sandwhich i buy the brown bread i found which is a good substitute but to be honest I would rather eat a small anti pasta plate, with some good dairy free cheese, tuna, and an advocado, or a bowl of yoghurt and fruit, soups (I make myself no gluten in them).

Anything which has thickening or a sauce will have gluten. NO CHEESE MAC unless you make it yourself lol.

SO ALL FOODS with sauce avoid, as they are thickened with agents that have gluten (wheat). BUT again you can find cheese sauces which are gluten free. You need to source a gluten free shop i can find lots of good stuff now just in my supermarkets.

Pasta buy a gluten free one. There are lots about and most of the ones i have tried have been ok. IF you get stuck i can send you a few bits to try.

CAKES. Find a good gluten free flour there are tons out there MAKE SURE THEY HAVE Xanthan Gum included in the recipe as this makes a whole lot of difference to the way the cakes turn out.

I have a couple of simple cake recipes i can send you that can be made gluten free very quickly and i can tell you right now, they have been tested by people who had no idea there was no gluten in them and not one person could tell the difference. My daughter is now on a mission and making tons of gluten free cake recipes. I will send you a few, cupcakes are yummy better then normal ones to be honest.

So we have covered the main areas.

It took me a few weeks to source the stuff i needed with trial and error. Dont forget it isnt life threatening that you go gluten free, so you can take a little time to get the right things that SUIT YOU and your family.

Once you find the right flour for instance you can make your own pies and still enjoy the things you like.

Once i had the four basics down the rest was easy.

I eat lots of rice dishes, loads of vegetables, salads, fruits, chicken, fish, and i only ever drink Almond milk now which is so healthy.

I used to love cous cous but that is a NO NO, so i substituted for Quinoa which is fine and i make my own salads with it now. Here is a nice recipe:

You can use sunflower seeds in salads as they are good for you too (I cant right now as i have no teeth lol).


I know niko likes cocunut oil, but it disagrees with me sadly gave me terrible stomach ache. I dont cook much with oil anyway everything is grilled mostly.

Its a challenge, but your family will benefit from it in the end.

Dont give up though, like i said its no point in trying to check everything, just start with the basics, and then the rest will follow.

All I can say is my stomach went down, i dont bloat and i dont get a tummy ache, but boy do i know it when i eat main gluten free food like bread A.G.O.N.Y.....

Sorry I meant extra virgin coconut oil, not to be confused with any other
extra virgin oils such as olive oil which should be  be used fresh as it does alter with heat ,unlike the coconut oil.
So use olive oil in your salad dressing, but coconut oil in your cooking.
Also look up "oil pulling". I do this with coconut oil every single morning!

Corn gluten is not gluten as its protein is different. Same with rice, its so-called gluten is not true gluten.

Unfortunately gluten is in so many things you would never think about until you start trying to avoid it. Gluten is the part of grain that makes batter and dough "stick together", makes oatmeal "glutenous". There is more gluten in refined "Wonder Bread" type products, but it is ADDED on purpose to whole grain bread products to make the dough behave correctly. Things like that are obvious, but things like condiments also have gluten, either from vinegar (except real apple cider vinegar) or "modified food starch" which is just another way of saying gluten....and it is in a lot of prepared foods!  Once you start reading labels you will be shocked.

Actual Celiac patients can usually eat corn gluten, but it is still gluten and I am not sure if it contributes to the inflammation problems or not. Maybe Maria or Niko know that. We have been doing the gluten free thing for quite a few years now and I just find it easier to skip the grain altogether now. We eat mostly grilled wild game, vegetables and fruit and no one seems to mind too much. Eating out is more challenging, but even that gets easier with a little practice. I am just so glad that I CAN eat gluten on rare occasions like holiday dinners and dinner parties without getting violently ill, even though I will definitely feel it for a few days after.

I have tried quite a few "gluten free" products and I haven't been impressed with most of them. Trying to get beans to taste like wheat takes a lot more processing than I am comfortable with, and the taste and/or texture is usually off enough that it isn't worth it to me to waste the time or the calories. Tinkyada Brown Rice Pasta is one of the few gluten free products that I'm impressed with. It has great flavor and texture and you can still have Al Dente pasta instead of mush.

Good luck! The first few weeks are the hardest. Once you get the hang of it, it is no big sacrifice.

I will wait to hear more! I already use only extra virgin olive oil so that's a positive.:)
The weight I've gained over the last year due to possible MS flare's,fatigue and balance issues and  sinus/cyst issues( I had surgery and cyst removed) then 2mths ago a  rushed abdominal hysterectomy surgery due to a few years of problems.:(
I'm now feeling somewhat better and ready to make good changes in my life.

I go see MS specialist June 20 and I'm praying the Lord will help me get answers then and if not I'll just wait for his timing.:)
Meahwhile, I need to help myself in a healthy way since the Lord has opened this door.

Do not trust "gluten-free" as:
The "Codex Alimentarius" international standards for food labeling has a standard relating to the labeling of products as "gluten-free", but this standard does not apply to foods that "...in their normal form do not contain gluten.

Weight loss related approaches are normally associated with low-carb
diets, as carbohydrates have as of recent times become the subject  of
scientific scrutiny, indicating that the real culprits in weight gain, are indeed  carbs,in most part, the guiltiest of all macro-nutrients!

Gluten on the other hand has been implicated mainly in many  gluten-sensitivity  linked conditions as factors and or co-factors including autoimmune and neurological with a lesser role in weight issues by itself
(as gluten is just the protein part of of the grain)
Replacing your cooking oils with extra virgin oil will give you the equivalent
in carbs in energy as it gets processed fast in the liver for immediate energy, mental energy as well, and not stored as fat, given some physical activity. You will also avoid the inflammatory long term effects of cooking oils!
Weight loss ( I say shedding pounds as loss is negative) is one of the main areas of my Hypnotherapy work and believe it or not most of the factors  of weight gain are underlying, sometimes not even conscious to the person concerned.
Another time I'll elaborate more extensively.
Now I must get a few things ready, as I'm flying tomorrow to Greece.
