Decreasing medication

by doctora, Nov 04, 2009 11:26AM
Here's a good one.  I was taking Seroquel 200 mg in the morning, 100 at noon, and 300 at night. Because of fatigue and weight gain, I dropped the noon tablet.  Last night my husband said that he thought I had stop taking my meds., because I am acting the way I did before I was on the meds., and he couldnt handle it, and that I was acting confrontational.
I doubt it, but could dropping the 100mg at noon cause a change in behavior? I doubt it, but he thinks I have dropped more than that one pill, which I havent.
He doesnt believe me - I started taking it again today, but I personally doubt that one pill would make any difference.

Any input?

Yes it could. Lowering the Seroquel by 100 mg. is a substantial reduction. If you are on Abilify now (without making any changes on your own) as generally only one antipsychotic is needed you could ask your psychiatrist if that could be raised to a large enough to substitute for the Seroquel. Antipsychotics as a rule are equally effective on psychosis but Seroquel I believe has more of a mood stabilization effect than Abilify though of course Abilify is less sedating. Speak to your psychiatrist about this but as a rule its best not to make adjustments on your own with any medication.

Hi IL;
Somehow I knew I could count on you to answer this question, and you are right, I shouldnt drop or increase meds without the Dr knowing, but I figure 100mg wasnt too bad considering I take 200 in the morn and 300 at night, but I guess I was wrong.

It is true though the Abilify increases the sedation effects of the Seroquel.

The reason she put me on the Abilify was to help reduce the sedating effect, if you recall, I had tried Geodeon on top of the Seroquel and I was wired in a bad way, shaking, heart palpatations etc. - very scary, so she put me on Abilify. My Dr is trying to get that medium effect, where the meds dont make me so tired, and yet still have the benefits.

You had mentioned Glycine previously, which I will look into, but I think right now I will just let things be, my body is still getting use to all these changes.

Thanks again IL
