I think you should not worry until an expert gives a right diagnose. Different things can cause auditory hallucinations and not only a "mentalMental retardation Mental status tests disorder" for example: anxiety, stress, sleep disorders, exposure to different traumatic events, deficiency of vitamins like B12 and D, etc. In most cases of auditory hallucination patients can have a very normal life after the right treatment .
Could be a few reasons for it. What a shock for you and your baby, and how helpless you must feel, not being able to hear what s/he hears. I think the main thing is to try to relax around your child, try not show if/when you're freaked and unsure of what to do. Be calm, show love and know that it will get diagnosed and treated. I have a friend with schizophrenia, and when she hears voices it can help her if I distract her. Sometimes I try to engage her in conversation. If she isn't up to that, I'll try to get her to sing a song with me. Hugs and reassurance work well. TV, music, games are a bit much for her when she's hearing things. Sometimes her voices are saying mean things to her, and when I know that's what's happening, I say positive and nice things to her to help balance it out.
To tell a parent they should not worry, is like like telling a fish it cannot breathe under water. You are terrified right now, and I understand first hand, my son is 17 and just had his first spychotic break 3 months ago. It was the most frightening, confusing and hurtful thing we had to experience. You have no control and cannot fix the situation, but..........there's always hope. My advice to you is be pro-active, take control with information, read- buy books, look for organizations that specialize in Mental ilnesses, and most of all, MAKE sure that the medical doctors rule out ALL organic causes for these symptoms. Do not allow anyone to just dump a mental illness on your lap, if everything else has not been ruled out. PLEASE journal EVERYTHING!!! child's behavior, dates, times, appointments, phone calls, conversations with doctors. This will ultimately become YOUR POINT of reference, and always research Meds, become aquaintated with it all. I know that it is all OVERWHELMING, but believe me when I tell you that information is your POWER. I will keep you in my prayers. Good luck!
Hope the best for you and your child.
I hope things get better for you and kiddie. :-)
