There are many women around the world who have FGM that is done to them and it is barbaric. I have researched FGM for class a couple semesters ago at my university, so I know all about what this is. FGM is in no way similar to circumcision, at all. It is the mutilation of a female's genitalia to either prevent her from having any sexual enjoyment or to make sure she has not had premarital sex, especially with some of the more extreme FGM when they sow together the opening of the vagina only leaving a pencil eraser sized hole. This can cause so many problems with sex, child birth, infections, etc. There is just no medical reason for it to ever be done and it needs to stop. This is far different than circumcision, which can have some medical benefits.

Some people do circumcision without thinking much into it, which is why I told the OP to really do their research and do what they feel comfortable with. If they want to go through with it as a preventative measure to avoid UTIs and infections, that is their choice to make.

The WHO estimates that 100–140 million women and girls around the world have experienced the procedure, including 92 million in Africa.
The above is from wikipedia on FGM.Full details on  the subject is given.

Yes you are right. I mentioned it as i just read    a post on FGM done is some African country and narrated her problem. There were few responses to that post.
Circumcision is compulsory in some community specially in Mohammedans without any medical emergency.

Circumcision and Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) are far from being similar and I am shocked that someone would even put them together. There is absolutely no medical reason for FGM to be done, while circumcision can be medically necessary, especially when a male gets recurrent infections/UTIs.

It is a personal preference. Let the child grow and decide about his own future.       Foreskin contains many nerve endings. It protects glans from becoming insensitive. In certain regions, clitoris is also operated depriving females of a most important sensitive part of genitals. There are scores of compaints from mutilated females. So the best thing would be let the person decide when he grows up to understand the pros and cons of the surgery.

This is a personal decision. Make sure to do some research on the pros and cons of each option(circumcised or not circumcised) and then carefully look at each. If you want to go for circumcision, then you can and there isn't anything "wrong" with doing so. Many people have done it in the past and many will do so in the future. People will try to sway you one way or the other, but it's really your decision to make. Do what you feel comfortable with.

Don't do it!  It is totally needless, and barbaric.  God designed the male with a foreskin for a reason - all that is required is to keep the penis clean (by that I mean pulling the foreskin over the head of the penis and washing there when having a bath or shower - and teaching your boy to do the same)  I refuse to believe that it can help lower STD rates!  All that is needed is basic personal hygiene - they say the best way to prevent flu is wash your hands, doesn't if follow that same logic in all ways? Of course! :-)

Circumcision is a pretty personal decision. Personally, I am pretty against it so my opinion is a little bias and honestly it comes down to what you and your partner decide. However, I suggest to weigh up the benefits versus the potential side effects of circumcision.

It is very important to keep under and around the foreskin clean. If it is not kept clean it can become infected and swollen and even get a yeast infection underneath it. Unless it is part of your religion, I really don't know of any other reason to get a circumcision done on your son. It has been argued that circumcision leads to a change in rates of STD transition and penile cancer, but I am not sure if this is true or a myth.

As far as the cons. It is an elective surgery done on a otherwise healthy week old boy and therefore has associated medial risks. Sometimes they go wrong. I read of a case a few years back were a dozen male infants got MRSA afterwards because of an accidental contamination. I'm not saying this happens often, but it is something to consider. Also my nephew, because his urethra was built differently, it was harmed during the circumcision and he had to battle constant UTI's and be on antibiotics for the first year and a half of his life. Again, I don't know how frequent it happens, but I know it does happen. Additionally there is also the difference in sexual pleasure for the male, although being a woman I can't verify any difference I just believe there would be one.
