Orgasm and bipolar disorder

by rbaumga, May 28, 2009 11:25PM
My girlfriend suffers from a bipolar disorder and has been under medication for the last 6 years. Because of this medication she usually finds it very hard or even impossible to reach orgasm. About two weeks ago, however, when we were making love, she reached a very violent orgasm that seems to have messed so much with the chemistry of her brain that she told me two days later, when we met again, that she had had a relapse and that she was so frightened about this that she didn't want to see me any more - I'm pretty sure it was the orgasm that did this to her because she told me it had been shortly after the orgasm that she started feeling bad. So we basically split up because she had an orgasm and because she apparently is afraid that she will suffer a new relapse every time she comes - the crazy and sad thing being that we were deeply in love before that, she had even introduced me to her family.
My question now is: what can be done about this? I'm sure there are other cases like this one, after all bipolar disorders are quite common - at least according to Wikipedia (0.5-5% incidence). So one should guess that there is literature and research and at least experience regarding this topic. In particular I wonder whether there is the possibility to somehow reduce the effects of the orgasm by using blockers. Or by temporarily withdrawing or reducing the bipolar medication (antidepressants)? Any suggestion would be appreciated.
