STD or Not what is it

Hi Doctor

I am a 28 year old male who 2 months ago had unprotected sexual intercourse in sth africa.
A couple of days later developed an itch sensation in the eye of the penis and a few days later some clear discharge more noticable in the morning and only a single drop. I went to see the doctor and he said it was Urethritis and put me on 1 tablet of cipro and 7 days 2 tablets of 100mg doxy. This seemed to do nothing and the symptoms stayed the same the only change was that i need to urinate more and the urgency became quite annoying.
So i went back to the doctor and he gave me a urine test and prostate test and all was well and put me on Augmentin for 5 days and a probiotic, this had no effect and the symptoms stayed the same.
So i changed doctors looking for an answer that would help me. The next doctor checked me out and i told him the history, but still no STD test and prescribed 5 days of 2 x 500mg cipro and 20 days 2 x 100mg doxy. This then caused another problem my tongue went white and i found it hard to swallow, but still no relief from the need to urinate, itchy urethra and i drop of clear discharge in the morning. All these doctors were sth african.
I finally arrived home and went to see my local GP who sent me to the infectious diseases people for a check up. (it is now 9 weeks after the sexual contact)
I had some tests and he tested for HIV, syphilis, Gonereera and chlamydia , i still have all the irritations of about a week after the initial contact.
All the test come back negative and he says that it is just some lingering irritation from what was probably chlamydia. The head of my penis around the eye is always red and feels very cold in the breeze.
At this stage i am really not getting any relief so i contact the girl in sth africa to see if she had had anything i should know about. She then get some tests done and they all come back negative as well. I am feeling run down probably from the stress of worrying
So now it has been some 12 weeks after and i have had no relief and am now starting to get some blood in my stool on when wiping. So i am really concerned but all the doctors say that i am clear of all things. I am not sure about this and need some advice.

1 could it be a UTI
2 is the white tongue thrush from antibiotic use
3 could the penile discharge be from thrush as well? candida can it cause what i have?
4 std testing how accurate is it? could i have chlamydia still?
5 if the female test are clear and so are mine , what could it be?

Please help as i am really starting to get down over this and cant get a clear answer

cheers simon

Hi simon,

I'm not a doctor, but it definitely sounds to me that you do have thrush. Thrush isnt an STI, as it can happen in people who are not sexually active although it can be passed on during sex.

The symptoms of thrush in a male are these:

•a very itchy, red, and sore glans (head of your penis),
•small red spots on the head of your penis (glans),
•discharge from your penis
•pain when passing urine,
•difficultly pulling back your foreskin, and
•a 'cheese-like' substance called smegma that smells a bit yeasty and sometimes collects under your foreskin.

Which most of these are what you have described. The antibiotics you were taking would have no benefit as they dont work on 'yeast' infections; Candida.

STD tests are reliable, and the antibiotics you were taking would have cleared it up if it was an STD.

Because you have mentioned the white tongue, it sounds as though you have got thrush in your mouth too from taking so many antibiotics.

OK so this is what should sort you out:

You need to purchase canesten oral and cream duo. You take one tablet and apply the cream to the end of your penis for about a week (7 - 10 days) the cream should sooth the itching, but you should still continue to use the cream even after it feels better for as long as 7 - 10 days so to makesure all the candida has gone because you have had it for quite a while.

You can buy this from a chemist, or you can go into a shop such as boots or superdrug or even asda. Some shops you can pick it up off the shelf without asking anyone, but if you have to ask the pharmascist, ask for the oral and cream duo.

This is what the product looks like, you can even but it at this link if you prefer.  http://www.canesten.co.uk/product-range.htm#content_4

Makesure you read the label before you use the treatment so you undertsand how to use it properly and wash your hands everytime you apply the cream.

I think this should clear up your problem quite nicely. If you still suffer symptoms after this then you definitely need to go back to a doctor, and demand that they get to the bottom of this, but to me, it sounds as simple as a thrush infection.

Good Luck, let us know how you get on.
