Vulval itching around and during menstruation

Hello!
Every time I have my period I've noticed that the area between my labia majora and minora (near the top, either side of the clitoris) becomes red and irritated, and by the end of the week it has become itchy. There are no spots that I can see. It just looks a little sore. This time there was even slight itching just before my period started.
This usually subsides once my period totally stops and I no longer have to wear sanitary pads and/or tampons.
Can anyone think why this happens? It's so annoying!

Thanks

Are you taking any birth control? Wondering if it could be a side affect. I have a copper IUD and I always get really itchy there within a few days of my period starting. It is really annoying. I think the last commenter might be onto something that you might be sensitive to whatever types of pads you are using. I am also sensitive and the only pads that have never bothered me are unscented Kotex brand. You might have a mild yeast or bacterial infection as well. My midwife suggested that I soak that area in really warm water with Braggs apple cider vinegar (with "the  mother" in it) and it does wonders!

Hi, thanks for replying!
Well I'm thinking it's sanitary pads but sometimes I get slight itching before my period too, but only around the top of my vulva. I only use dove soap so I don't think that would be an issue? The irritation around my vulva and betwwen my labia minora and majora isn't extreme, it just happens a few times a day mainly when I'm walking around so that does make me think there might be some friction from the pads.
I will mention it once I see my doctor next month!

Hi,
Have you spoke w/ a gynecologist about this? That would be my first suggestion. Secondly, it sounds like you may possibly be having an allergic reaction to the fem. hygiene products (pads/tampons, or any soaps?) that you are using. Maybe try the process of elimination, see which products separately, cause a reaction and which don't.  I know that for some women the materials used in pads can cause irritations, and can feel like a rash or friction burn. Do you use any soap or washes that contain a lot of fragrances (?) ~ those may cause irritation also.  If it continues, you might consider making an appointment w/ your doctor soon to figure out what is going on.
