Inert IUD Availability

by mapoftheworld, May 22, 2009 01:11PM
Dear Doctors,

I am trying to find out the brand names of currently marketed inert IUDs - IUDs that contain neither copper or hormones, made only of plastic and/or stainless steel.

Here's the reason:  I had a copper IUD (NOVA T) inserted four years ago, and very soon afterward began getting acne on my back.  I was 26 at the time I had the cooper IUD inserted, and I had never experienced this type of acne before.

I've researched and found some evidence that the copper/nickel could cause eczematous dermatitis.  It is important to note that my particular IUD contains silver as well, so that also could be the aggravant.  I am to the point where I'm considering Accutane, but due to its possible side effects, I'd like it to be the absolute LAST option.  What I'd like to do is change my IUD first to see if that has been the cause of my acne.

So, are inert IUDs still available?  If not, which copper IUDs contain no silver and have the least possible amount/surface area of copper?  Due to past problems with hormonal birth control, I do not want to try hormonal IUDs such as Mirena.  Also, I do not live in the United States, so I am not limited to Paraguard.

Has anyone else experienced body acne after the insertion of an IUD?

Thank you VERY much for your attention.

Hello.

I am not aware of non-copper or non-hormonal IUDs here in the U.S. Even the plastic ones have some copper.

If you want up-to-date information about inert IUDs, I suggest you post this question in the Gynecology Expert Forum at:

The gynecologist will have the latest information. You will also need to state in which country you live, so she can tell you what's available there. Good luck. Dr. J
