semen that smells horrible

My husband's semen smells absolutely horrible.  What can be causing this problem?  Is it an STD?

Once any medical problem is ruled out...then you can look to other more subtle issues that can be influencing taste and smell.  As the fine doctor has already stated, this is pretty subjective, but this is an area I do have quite a bit of experience in and I have found some things definitely affect the smell and taste of semen.  Some suggestions....smoking of any kind makes semen incredibly bitter smelling and tasting...if your hubby smokes then he should stop for oh, SO many reasons!  From my experience other things I have noted that make the semen more bitter tasting and smelling are high lactic acid in the system (ie: exercise but not drinking enough water), high protein consumption (vegetarians are definitely sweeter), spicy foods in general (I don't go near my guy after Mexican food!) and then some guys have just naturally strong tasting or smelling semen.

Thank you doctor for your wonderful service!

I don't know. Only one way to find out: an exam by a physician.

There are many factors which can influence the smell and taste of semen, including diet, stress, drugs, STDs, etc. If he's under lots of stress lately, or has changed his diet (e.g., lots of garlic not only changes the smell of perspiration, but also affects semen/vaginal fluid as well), this could be a factor.

And, of course, your judgment about the smell may be entirely subjective. His semen may actually smell just fine, but for some reason, you don't like it. I merely bring up this possibility because without smelling it myself, I have no idea whether there's a problem.

Is it a problem for him, or just you? If he feels it's a problem, and he can rule out any of the above-mentioned factors, then an exam is in order. If it's just you that is bothered by this, I suggest using condoms so you don't come in contact with his semen. Dr. J
